The Crew Leader will coordinate, supervise, transport, and mentor high school youth crew members participating in the Youth Trails and Trades Program. The crew leader is expected to lead and work alongside youth crew members as they complete various trail conservation projects in the field, participate in skilled trades learning experiences, and participate in other job readiness workshops.

The Crew Leader will be responsible for managing all aspects of their crew's performance while regularly coordinating with Trails Division staff to keep them informed of project status and outcomes. The crew will consist of 4 high school youth crew members (ages 16+) and will run through the summer break, June-August.

  • Coordinates and collaborates on projects, timelines, and outcomes with the Trails Division and other appropriate staff to ensure smooth operations and execution.
  • Provides field-based supervision and support to crew members.
  • Manages trail construction & maintenance projects, work outcomes, and crew dynamics.
  • Facilitates team operations including maintaining tools & equipment and managing work sites.
  • Documents progress on key projects, including photographs and written reports.
  • Proactively manages risk by creating and maintaining a safe, inclusive work environment.
  • Models Cleveland Metroparks mission and values to crew members and the public
  • Regularly travels to various work locations, including remote locations to support projects and work alongside crew members.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree, or working towards a degree, preferred in environmental science, ecology, landscape architecture, planning, environmental studies, biology, teaching, or other related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience or strong interest in supervising and mentoring youth (outdoor setting preferred).
  • Previous trail building, carpentry, construction, or other skilled trades experience and knowledge not required but preferred. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Ability to perform trail construction and maintenance work in both wilderness and non-wilderness settings, carrying and lifting 50 pounds or more and hiking up to 3 miles.
  • Excellent leadership skills, interpersonal skills, and strong work ethic are required.
  • Working knowledge of safely operating power and hand-tools is a plus
  • Ability to prioritize positive team dynamics while completing high-quality projects.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, must be available to work a flexible work schedule

Work Location: This position reports to Astorhurst Building in Bedford Reservation
