Summary

Perform the fueling and cleaning of transit buses and support vehicles utilizing departmental equipment as authorized and available to accomplish the work.

Scope of Responsibility

The incumbent will perform recurring work situations with occasional variations from the norm involving a low degree of complexity. Work is performed in accordance with established and well-known policies and procedures, safety practices, and laws. Individuals assigned to this classification provide general direction to Janitor/Hostlers and receive moderate supervision from the Assistant Manager of Fleet Maintenance.

Essential Functions

The following summarizes the essential or key responsibilities/attributes of the position the incumbent will be required to perform with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Monitor and maintain essential fluid and lubricant levels in all C-TRAN vehicles.

  • Fuel all transit coaches and support vehicles.

  • Carry out vehicle pre-trip inspections, which include minor repairs and adjustments.

  • Spot clean transit coaches daily to include brushing or wiping seats, sweeping the floor, cleaning dirty windows and mirrors, cleaning driver’s dash area, dumping garbage, wiping handrails, removing graffiti, and cleaning other dirty areas.

  • Major clean transit coaches to include exterior washing, engine steam cleaning, interior cleaning, dusting, washing windows, and shampooing seats. Mop vehicle floors using disinfectant solution.

  • Clean staff cars and surrounding work areas.

  • Operate C-TRAN transit coaches and support vehicles within shop area, through bus wash and on public streets as needed.

Other Functions

  • Monitor security of assigned equipment and facilities. Report unusual conditions to employees of higher classification or police department as conditions warrant.

  • Provide assistance to Mechanics as directed.

  • Advise supervisor as to the need for additional maintenance supplies.

  • Prepare and complete necessary reports and logs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Requires knowledge of the field of assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of assigned duties.

Skill in

  • Certification of completion of a relevant course of training related to typical duties and/or previous work experience related to the typical duties is desired.

Ability to

  • Ability to assure accuracy and safety in the maintenance and operation of C-TRAN transit coaches and support vehicles.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Ability to perform continuous physical effort including frequent bending, stooping, walking, standing, kneeling, twisting, manipulation, lifting and carrying of shop equipment and materials.

  • Must be able to hear warning horns when vehicles are in motion.

  • Responsibilities of position may result in exposure to environmental influences (beyond normal office environment) such as poor ventilation and illumination, loud noises, adverse weather conditions, congestion, and accidents or health hazards on the job which includes working with chemicals and operating equipment/machinery.

Additional Requirements

  • Regular, dependable attendance required.

  • Must be able to work any day of the week and/or any shift, including days, swing, and graveyard.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license from the state of residence and maintain a good driving record. A commercial driver’s license will be required within a specified time frame, determined by the supervisor, to maintain this position.

  • Must be able to comply with C-TRAN’s nonsmoking policy and work in a nonsmoking work environment.

  • Must pass an employment physical examination and drug test to be certified for the position and be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • This is a safety sensitive position subject to Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations.

  • Must promote and model safety within the department and agencywide through reporting and addressing safety issues, supporting safety campaigns, maintaining a safe work area, assisting in safety training documentation, and certification record keeping.

International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) Union

This position is covered under the provisions of an agreement with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) Union, District Lodge No. 24 for and on behalf of it’s affiliate Local Lodge No. 1432.
