Simmonds Precision is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Motion Controls engineering team. In this role, you will lead design, analysis, and testing activities for the development of advanced actuation systems for aerospace and defense applications.
This position requires deep expertise in mechanical design, with strong preference for experience in electronics packaging and structural and thermal analysis of products operating in demanding environments. The ideal candidate will serve as a technical leader, driving engineering excellence across multidisciplinary teams and contributing across the full product lifecycle—from concept development through production and qualification.
This role will be on-site and located in Vergennes, VT

 What You Will Do
- Lead the mechanical design and development of motor-driven actuation systems, including housings, gear trains, and integrated assemblies
- Own and guide electronics packaging design and analysis to meet demanding environmental requirements (thermal, vibration, shock, etc.)
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Systems, Electrical, Software, Project Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to develop and execute integrated program plans
- Provide mechanical engineering leadership for proposals, design reviews, and customer engagements; ensure designs meet all technical, cost, and schedule requirements
- Contribute to and lead internal and customer design reviews (e.g., PDR, CDR, TRR), presenting technical approaches and results
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including design process enhancements, lessons learned, and adoption of best practices
Qualifications You Must Have
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years’ experience.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
Qualifications We Prefer
- Demonstrated experience with electronics packaging, including mechanical design of PCB assemblies, enclosures, and thermal management solutions
- Strong proficiency with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo) and FEA software (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus)
- Experience performing structural and thermal finite element analysis for high-reliability applications
- Experience designing motor-driven or actuation systems (e.g., electromechanical actuators, gear systems, precision mechanisms)
- Hands-on experience in aerospace or defense product development, including integration of electromechanical systems
- Experience managing cost and schedule for engineering scope (e.g., Earned Value Management exposure)
- Experience supporting and presenting at major design reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR)
- Experience developing proposals, including Basis of Estimates (BOEs) and technical volume contributions
