SUMMARY
The Fitness Instructor is responsible for instructing group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with VHPD's policies and procedures.
SUPERVISION
Immediate Supervisor: Recreation Supervisor - Fitness
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Plan appropriate aerobic activity.
- Attend quarterly fitness meetings.
- Count total participants in class then collect receipts from each participant and return the receipts, at the end of each class, to the front desk.
- If unable to teach an assigned class, secure a substitute instructor who has been approved by the Vernon Hills Park District.
- Check supplies and equipment for wear and tear and advise if supplies or equipment need repair or replacement.
- Demonstrate a mature and professional attitude through dependability, punctuality, and genuine awareness.
- Instructor must be present and accountable for participant's safety and action while the program is in session.
- Allow enough time before and after each program for set-up and clean-up.
- Keep an open line of communication with the Fitness Supervisor on the progress of the program and any obstacles that might arise.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT
- Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and departmental-specific safety rules.
- Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and or moving objects 25 pounds or less.
- Reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly.
- Attends required safety program and in-service education meetings.
- Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Must work closely with co-workers and the general public.
- Experiences ongoing concerns for all safety and liability issues.
- Must have ability to deal with other people under stressful situations.
- May have to work under stressful situations, when First Aid or CPR are required.
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Lifting is required, usually 25 pounds or less.
- May need to respond to situations quickly and accurately.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
- May be required to work during various weather conditions, including hot temperatures.
COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS
- Must be knowledgeable about subject matter and constantly strive for improvement.
- Must use good judgment at all times and be aware of immediate surroundings.
- Must be able to respond to and handle participant's behaviors in a positive appropriate manner.
Qualifications
Must have the ability to work with adults and understand their needs. Be committed to working the length of the program. Must be experienced, self-motivated, and responsible. A.C.E., A.S.A.A., A.F.A.A certification or equivalent training required. At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.
