Position Summary
In this role, you will own the design and development of mechanical subsystems and assemblies for ruggedized communications and signals intelligence products. You will work across the full product lifecycle—from concept through prototype, test, and production—ensuring designs meet performance, durability, and manufacturability requirements.
You will be successful if you can independently execute complex mechanical designs, collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, and translate design intent into hardware that performs reliably in demanding environments. This role requires strong technical judgment, hands-on problem solving, and the ability to drive work forward with minimal oversight while supporting and guiding less experienced team members.
What You’ll DoÂ
- Own the design and development of mechanical components, assemblies, and subsystems for ruggedized electromechanical systemsÂ
- Develop and maintain CAD models, drawing packages, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)Â
- Drive designs from concept through prototype, validation, and production releaseÂ
- Collaborate with electrical, RF, software, NPI, and manufacturing teams to ensure successful system integrationÂ
- Support and participate in prototype and pilot builds, working closely with engineering technicians to validate and refine designsÂ
- Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and system-level issues identified during development, build, and test activitiesÂ
- Apply design principles related to structural integrity, thermal performance, and environmental durabilityÂ
- Contribute to design reviews, identifying risks and supporting mitigation strategiesÂ
- Work with suppliers and manufacturing teams to refine designs for manufacturability, cost, and scalabilityÂ
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance to engineering technicians
What You’ll bring Â
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fieldÂ
- 3–7 years of experience in mechanical design and product developmentÂ
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Inventor, SolidWorks, Creo, or similar)Â
- Experience creating and maintaining engineering drawings, BOMs, and design documentationÂ
- Demonstrated ability to independently execute mechanical designs for components and assembliesÂ
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issuesÂ
- Experience working in a cross-functional engineering environmentÂ
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with ruggedized electronics or electromechanical packagingÂ
- Familiarity with prototype builds, NPI environments, or low-volume productionÂ
- Knowledge of MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, or similar environmental standardsÂ
- Understanding of DFM/DFA principles and manufacturing processesÂ
Our Firmware  Â
At Metrea, our single core value, Rooted in Humility, and our four cornerstone attributes—Entrepreneurial, Systematic, Discerning, and Over-Deliver. These form what we call our Teammate Firmware. Just like technical firmware connects software and hardware, our Firmware is the constant interface between our mission and our people. It defines how we show up, how we work together, and how we solve complex problems.Â
Our team Firmware creates a web-like, hyper-collaborative, dynamically hierarchical way of working that helps us adapt quickly, communicate openly, and distribute decision-making to where expertise actually lives. It enables groups to self-organize around hard problems, shift fluidly as priorities evolve, and operate with the trust, curiosity, and discipline required in a complex mission space. This foundation allows us to deliver elegant, effective solutions and uphold our purpose: protecting our precious inheritance.Â
