Position Summary

The Systems Integration Engineer is responsible for ensuring our physical vessels and integrated mission systems are safe, reliable, operationally ready, and performing as intended across demanding customer-facing opportunities. The role owns the integration and system-level performance of vessel hardware, electronics, software, sensors, communications, navigation, control systems, power and energy systems, payloads, and associated mission equipment, ensuring that individual components and subsystems operate seamlessly as a complete platform.

Working as part of the Mission Success team, the role leads and supports system integration, commissioning, verification, and validation activities, including rigorous pre- and post-operation checks, functional testing, fault finding, configuration management, and preventative maintenance. The engineer applies intelligent, practical engineering judgement to diagnose complex cross-system issues, coordinates rapid resolution of integration failures, and ensures that interfaces between mechanical, electrical, software, and mission systems are clearly understood and robustly controlled.

The role also drives structured data capture and disciplined root-cause analysis, turning operational issues and emerging system behaviours into clear, actionable engineering lessons. Through close collaboration with engineering, operations, and customers, the Systems Integration Engineer helps identify failure modes early, improve system reliability, and continuously adapt and optimise the vessels and their integrated mission capabilities.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team to rapidly develop and deploy working prototypes, drawing on marine and systems engineering experience to establish appropriate system architectures and integration approaches.
  • Responsible for the configuration, integration, commissioning, and testing of devices and subsystems, including sensors, actuators, communications, networking, navigation, control, and other mission-critical systems.
  • Developing and integrating solutions spanning hardware, software, networking, and vessel systems that meet project, operational, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Overseeing system integration, prototyping, simulation, verification, and testing activities to validate design assumptions and demonstrate system performance.
  • Producing clear and robust technical documentation to support system integration, commissioning, setting-to-work, testing, and operational deployment.
  • Conducting and supporting sea trials, including the testing and validation of software, hardware, networking, and whole-craft system integration in representative operating environments.
  • Working closely with software, electrical, mechanical, and wider engineering teams to ensure systems, software, interfaces, and supporting documentation are delivered to the required standard and within project timescales.
  • Diagnosing complex system-level faults and integration issues, using structured troubleshooting, data analysis, and root-cause investigation to identify and resolve problems efficiently.
  • Supporting configuration management and maintaining accurate records of system versions, settings, test results, issues, and changes throughout the development and operational lifecycle.
  • Working to the highest standards of safety and engineering discipline across system development, integration, testing, validation, and vessel operations.
  • Applying a practical, hands-on and collaborative approach to problem solving, with a strong focus on getting integrated systems working reliably in real-world operating environments.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential –

  • Degree level qualification in Mechatronics, Electronics Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
  • Hardware integration and testing experience ideally within the marine sector

Desirable –

  • An understanding of control strategy
  • PLC programming, including Codesys
  • An understanding of basic electronics
  • Software development in modern C++ and/or Python
  • Experience with CAN bus
  • Experience with industry standard communication protocols, such as CANOpen, NMEA2000, NMEA0183
