The City of Virginia Beach is seeking a highly skilled Network Security Administrator to secure, monitor, and maintain the city’s enterprise network infrastructure. This role is responsible for safeguarding critical municipal systems, ensuring network reliability, and supporting cybersecurity operations that protect residents, employees, and city services.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in network security, thrives in a fast‑paced operational environment, and is committed to protecting public‑sector systems through proactive defense, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
Network Security Administration
- Configure, manage, and maintain firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), VPNs, and security appliances.
- Monitor network traffic for anomalies, threats, and performance issues.
- Implement and enforce network security policies, access controls, and segmentation strategies.
- Conduct vulnerability remediation, patching, and system hardening across network components.
Security Operations & Incident Response
- Participate in incident detection, triage, containment, and remediation activities.
- Investigate security alerts, logs, and events using SIEM and monitoring tools.
- Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to analyze threats, assess risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
- Maintain documentation for incidents, changes, and security configurations.
Network Operations & Infrastructure Support
- Support the design, deployment, and maintenance of switches, routers, wireless systems, and network services.
- Troubleshoot complex network issues and coordinate resolution with internal teams and vendors.
- Assist with network performance tuning, capacity planning, and lifecycle management.
- Support disaster recovery, redundancy, and business continuity initiatives.
Compliance, Governance & Best Practices
- Ensure network security practices comply with city policies, state/federal regulations, and cybersecurity frameworks.
- Maintain accurate documentation of network diagrams, configurations, and procedures.
- Support audits, assessments, and reporting requirements related to network security.
- Promote best practices for secure network architecture and operational resilience.
Requirements:
- Must be a US citizen.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or related field; OR 6 or more years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
- 3–5+ years of experience in network security, network administration, or security operations.
- Strong understanding of firewalls, IDS/IPS, VPNs, routing, switching, and network protocols.
- Experience with SIEM tools, log analysis, and security monitoring platforms.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, threat landscapes, and incident response practices.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex network and security issues.
- Successful background and drug screening check.
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience working in local government or public‑sector IT environments.
- Familiarity with municipal systems, public‑safety networks, or critical infrastructure environments.
- Certifications such as Security+, Network+, CCNA/CCNP Security, CISSP, or equivalent.
- Experience with cloud networking, zero‑trust architectures, or next‑generation security tools.
- Knowledge of NIST frameworks, state cybersecurity guidelines, or compliance standards.
