Sonic Summary

info
  • Boston Dynamics is looking for a Senior Staff Electrical Engineer to contribute to the development of the Atlas humanoid robot.
  • Candidates should have at least 7 years of experience in designing PCBAs with wireless communications and expertise in EMI/EMC mitigation strategies.
  • The role involves leading electrical design, managing validation lifecycles, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • The salary range for this position is between $114,195.28 to $181,175.20 annually, depending on experience and skills.
  • The position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, 401(k), and paid time off.

As a Senior Staff Electrical Engineer at Boston Dynamics, you will play a pivotal role in the evolution of Atlas, our advanced humanoid robot. You will join a fast-moving team tackling the challenges of integrating high-performance wireless connectivity and ensuring electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) within a densely packed and complex electromechanical system.

Boston Dynamics is seeking candidates with deep design experience integrating radio modules/antennas and experience with ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing/mitigation. You will work hands-on — from the bench to the test chamber — building, debugging, and validating systems ranging from component-level prototypes to fully integrated humanoid robots.

The ideal candidate will have expert-level proficiency in developing embedded systems with wireless modules/antennas and have knowledge of EMC testing as well as radio and/or antenna array integration. To thrive in this role, you must be able to work efficiently on multiple development threads in separate, evolving contexts.

How you will make an impact / Day-to-Day Activities:

  • Lead the design of electrical schematics and layouts incorporating power, analog, microprocessor, radio modules, and antennas

  • Own the EMI/EMC and RF validation lifecycle, including testing strategy, contribute significantly to regulatory compliance efforts (e.g. Intentional Radiator, Immunity/Susceptibility), and manage relationships with 3rd party test labs.

  • Define and drive design architecture, component strategy, and design validation plans for complex, multi-board systems

  • Work cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to design and optimize radio/antenna performance in a challenging, metal-rich mechanical environment

  • Debug electrical and radio communication issues to root cause and develop improvements

  • Utilize Linux command-line tools and scripting (Python/Bash/etc.) to configure radios/networks, execute tools, and automate testing

  • Provide mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers on best practices, design methods, and development workflows

  • Develop comprehensive design documents and test plans/reports

We are looking for / You Bring:

It is not expected that candidates would possess all of these qualifications.

  • Experience: 7+ years of proficiency / demonstrated architectural leadership designing PCBAs incorporating wireless communications subsystems using Altium or similar CAD tools

  • RF & EMC Expertise: Expert grasp of EMI/EMC mitigation strategies in high-speed/high-power environments, and a deep knowledge of RF fundamentals (link budget, antenna tuning, coexistence).

  • OS & Networking: Proficiency with Linux command line and computer networking concepts

  • Fabrication Knowledge: Strong knowledge of PCB fabrication, assembly, and signal integrity

  • Scripting: Competency with Python, LabView, and/or MATLAB

  • Education: BS or MS (preferred) in Electrical Engineering or related field

Nice to have:

  • Simulation: Experience with RF/EMI simulation tools such as ANSYS HFSS

  • Advanced Testing: Proficiency operating advanced RF test equipment (VNAs, Spectrum Analyzers, Anritsu MT8000A/MT8862)

  • Wireless Standards: Experience using  WiFi and Cellular standards and protocols

  • High-Speed Digital: Experience implementing ethernet, PCIe, or other high speed data technologies
