The Senior Community Accountant is responsible for day-to-day accounting and reporting for a group of communities within the Benchmark portfolios as well as assisting in month-end close related tasks.  The role serves as the main point of contact for any financial related needs for community Business Partners, such as Executive Directors (ED) or Directors of Business Administrations (DBA) located at our communities.  As the primary financial resource, the Senior Community Accountant must provide exemplary customer service both internally and externally.

The responsibilities include the timely preparation of monthly financial packages, maintaining accurate and detailed workpapers, and coordinating and communicating financial information and results to business partners.

Major duties and responsibilities:

  • For assigned group of communities (8-12):
    • Prepare and post monthly standard journal entries.
    • Review and reconcile all general ledger accounts for assigned communities (various monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual workpapers)
    • Perform monthly Balance Sheet and Income Statement trend reviews.
    • Maintain an open line of communication between the Executive Directors and Directors of Business Administrations.
    • Conduct monthly financial review calls with Business Partners within communities
    • Coach and support Business Partners within communities on adherence to Company’s internal controls.
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations (may be other communities than those assigned, as some are consolidated in portfolios)
  • Perform/manage other tasks within accounting on a Benchmark-consolidated basis, such as but not limited to: Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets, Real Estate Taxes, etc.
  • Engage in departmental projects and initiatives related to enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of existing processes and implementing new processes.
  • Provide financial information, as needed, to internal Financial Planning & Analysis staff
  • Perform ad-hoc analysis and troubleshooting of matters as they arise.

Education/Experience:

  • BS or BA degree in accounting, finance or business from accredited college or university
  • 3-5 years of relevant Accounting experience, property accounting is a plus
