Job Description Summary:

Under limited supervision, the trainer role provides support and leadership in all aspects of the Fitness program. They lead, instruct, and motivate participants in safe and effective exercise programming including cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and range of motion. They are responsible for organizing customized personal exercise programs, assessing strengths and weaknesses, ensuring safety, clear communication and record keeping.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES    

  • Conducts comprehensive personal training sessions based on ACSM national standards and Parks and Recreation Fitness Program guidelines.

  • Provides weight room orientations, checks equipment for safety, acts as a resource for patrons including customer service and answers questions.

  • Instructs and educates patrons of all ages from youth (ages 12+) to older adults on safe and proper use of weight and cardiovascular equipment and safe spotting techniques providing modifications and corrections as applicable.  

  • Performs fitness assessments and takes biometric measurements for clients, including blood pressure, body composition, muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular and range of motion.

  • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the Fitness and Parks and Recreation programs including accurate completion of all required paperwork.   

  • Provides exceptional customer service to include answering customers’ questions, maintaining a positive and friendly class environment, and enforcing facility policies.    

  • Knows and complies with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

  • Continues education in the field, maintains certification(s) and job knowledge to remain current with trends, teaching techniques and attends all in-house training and staff meetings. 

  • Takes proper safety precautions to ensure participant safety and prevent accidents.

  • Ensures safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Reports all accidents and damage to city property immediately within 24 hours.      

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned areas and make judgments related to safety.

  • Ability to understand and observe participant behavior and monitor exertion levels.  

  • Ability to keep accurate records, organize information, and follow established procedures.  

  • Ability to tactfully and effectively communicate with clients, class participants, front desk staff, & coordinators, with excellent customer service.  

  • Ability physically to demonstrate the proper technique in exercises being taught.

  • Ability to stay actively engaged and assist with development of exercise skills.  

  • Ability to commit to the agreed-upon schedule.  

  • Ability to maintain all required and relevant certifications throughout employment.

  • Ability to use required software applications on mobile and desktop devices.

  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology relative to safe exercise education. 

  • Knowledge and strong understanding in a variety of exercise programming for a variety of populations including youth and older adults.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the importance of punctuality and consistency.

  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to teach group fitness and weight training classes to all age groups youth (ages 12+) to older adults.   

  • Ability to design exercise programs for individuals with chronic diseases, and in stages of post-rehabilitation.   

  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology, kinesiology, exercise science or related degree.

  • Nationally recognized certification or training in addition to base certification/training. 

  • Experience in weight and fitness class instruction, personal training, exercise testing and exercise program design for all populations.   

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Current personal training certification from either: ACE, NSCA, AFAA, ACSM, AAAI/ISMA, NEDITA, ISSA, NASM, NFPT, IFPA or any nationally recognized certification.  

  • Three (3) years of customer service experience, which includes experience in exercise programming and training clients.

  • Current Red Cross or equivalent CPR & First Aid certification.

Supervision Received:  Program Supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS   

  • Physical and Mental Effort: Ability to perform a wide range of strenuous physical fitness skills. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. Ability to use mobile and desktop devices (iPad, smartphone, and computer).

  • Work Environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment.  Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.     

  • Machines and Equipment Used: Free weights, various weight and exercise machines, functional equipment (kettle bells, medicine balls, resistance bands, etc.) stereo and microphone equipment.
