Major Responsibilities:

  • Follows lab procedures for specimen collection, handling and processing in an efficient manner. Knowledgeable of specimen requirements and refers to reference manual as needed.

  • Adheres to patient test management protocols to provide overall quality assurance from the pre-analytic, analytic, to the post-analytic phases of testing to include proper identification. Clarifies discrepancies in test orders with physician or Diagnostic Supervisor.

  • Performs and documents instrument maintenance and calibration as needed.

  • Maintains required clerical records for Lab and X-Ray (i.e., patient logs, requests, results, reagent log, addendums, critical or flagged reports).

  • Participates in proficiency testing as assigned.

  • Performs all activities necessary to produce correct x-rays (i.e., patient I.D., patient gowning, handling of injured patients, positioning of patients, labeling and determining correct exposure to produce optimum x-rays in an efficient manner).

  • Assists Diagnostic Supervisor in teaching and on-the-job training of lab/x-ray procedures for new personnel as instructed.

  • Performs other patient care duties when required.

  • Carries out EXAMINE protocols accurately and in a timely manner. Keeps informed of updates, new clients, and related changes in policy.

  • Assists the Diagnostic Supervisor in maintaining the appropriate laboratory and X-ray supplies as required by department guidelines.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

Radiology graduates: American Registry of Radiology Technology (ARRT); Laboratory Medicine graduates: certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Education Required:

Associates degree in Radiology or Laboratory Medicine.

Experience Required:

One year of experience in patient care is preferred.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Must be able to use visual near and distance acuity. Must have verbal ability to communicate in person and over the phone or radio. Must be able to assist co-workers in transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using good body mechanics. Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds, specific to the job class evaluation. Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and change from one position to the other rapidly. Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 pounds specific to job class evaluation. Must be able to tolerate high noise, busy atmospheres and noxious odors. Must be able to work in noisy environments and be self directed to complete jobs as ordered. Must be able to remain calm under stressful situations. Must be able to assess and respond to multiple situations simultaneously. Must be able to assist co-workers in multiple overlapping tasks simultaneously. Must be able to prioritize job tasks and organize work space to be efficient and conducive to completing work tasks as assigned in a timely manner.
