Ultium Cells, LLC. is a joint venture Lithium-ion automotive battery cell manufacturing plant between LG Energy Solution, Ltd., and General Motors. This high-technology plant is a new construction that will have the latest in battery cell manufacturing technology. This $2.3 billion investment will be among the largest battery cell manufacturing plants in the world. Ultium Cells will produce battery cells for General Motors’ North American electric vehicle applications.

Ultium Cells’ partners include LG Energy Solution, Ltd.; the world’s largest manufacturer of automotive battery cells, and General Motors; a global company committed to delivering safer, better and more sustainable ways for people to get around.


Position Description:

The Battery Assembly QA Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the Quality Engineering organization to ensure product quality. This role provides technical and organizational leadership for manufacturing quality, drives continuous improvement, supports 4M change control, PPAP activities, and warranty issues resolution, and ensures compliance with automotive quality standards.  The manager partners closely with Production, Process Engineering, and Operations to improve product quality, manufacturing efficiency, and customer satisfaction while fostering a culture of operational excellence. This position requires occasional on-call support.


Job Responsibilities:

This role is responsible for driving continuous process improvement and maintaining product quality through teamwork and effective communication.  This role collaborates with Production, Process Engineering, and cross-functional teams to achieve departmental goals and identify future improvement opportunities.


•    Lead and mentor Quality Engineers and Quality Technicians.

•    Provide technical leadership for manufacturing quality and engineering problem-solving.

•    Lead the implementation, validation, and optimization of rule-based and AI-powered vision inspection systems across battery assembly operations.

•    Collaborate with the Vision Inspection Technology team to enhance automated vision inspection capabilities.

•    Build a proactive quality culture through coaching and continuous improvement.

•    Drive cross-functional collaboration across Manufacturing Engineering, Product Development, Operations, Electrode Quality and Equipment Technology teams.

•    Communicate quality performance, risks, and improvement strategies to senior leadership.

•    Lead engineering reviews, design reviews, and technical decision-making.

•    Lead cross-functional problem-solving efforts to resolve manufacturing and product quality issues.

•    Collaborate with global LG Energy Solution battery manufacturing sites to share knowledge and best practices related to Cell Quality Processes.

•    Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of standardized work instructions to ensure operational safety, consistency, and efficiency.

•    Lead Root Cause Analysis (8D, 5Why, Fishbone) for quality issues

•    Validate the effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions

•    Monitor SPC and process capability (Cpk/Ppk), and quality KPIs

•    Manage customer quality concerns, warranty investigations, and containment activities

•    Support APQP, PPAP, and new product launch quality activities

•    Additional duties as assigned



Qualifications and Competencies:

•    Bachelor's degree required in Engineering or Engineering Technology required

•    5+ years of experience in Manufacturing Quality, Production, Process, or Equipment Engineering

•    1-3 years of experience leading teams, task forces, or supervisory functions

•    3-5 years of Battery Cell Quality experience highly desirable 

•    Driven by objectives and KPIs, with a high level of accountability and ownership.

•    Ability to apply logical thinking and sound decision-making by objectively identifying root causes through data analysis, evaluating production performance, and applying structured problem-solving methodologies.

•    Strong mechanical aptitude with a high level of technical curiosity and analytical thinking.

•    Commitment and desire to learn our complex battery manufacturing processes with the goal of becoming a go-to resource for technical problem-solving discussions

•    Effective communication and presentation skills

•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office, technical report writing, and verbal communication.

•    Ability to work well with individuals and teams across the company to achieve team goals and targets

•    Strong computer, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills

•    Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment

•    Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or Black Belt) preferred.
