Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated, highly organized, and curious Health & Safety / Human Resources Co-op Student to join our team. This role provides hands-on experience in both field and office environments, with approximately 80% of the position focused on Health & Safety and 20% on Human Resources.

The successful candidate will work closely with our Health & Safety, Human Resources, and Operations teams to support workplace safety initiatives, employee training, onboarding and offboarding, documentation, and day-to-day administrative activities.

We are looking for someone who does not simply complete a checklist. The ideal candidate is a curious and critical thinker, a natural problem solver, and highly tech-savvy. You should be comfortable asking questions, looking for better ways to do things, identifying potential issues, and using technology to make processes more organized and efficient.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety – Approximately 80%

  • Conduct regular workplace and job site inspections to identify hazards and opportunities for improvement.
  • Complete field safety audits and document observations, findings, and corrective actions.
  • Assist with tracking and following up on outstanding safety items and corrective actions.
  • Support the development, coordination, and delivery of employee safety training, orientations, toolbox talks, and other safety initiatives.
  • Assist with new employee safety onboarding and orientation.
  • Maintain Health & Safety documentation, records, training certificates, inspection reports, and employee files.
  • Assist with incident and near-miss documentation, investigations, and follow-up activities.
  • Support compliance with company policies, procedures, applicable legislation, and Health & Safety requirements.
  • Assist with the preparation and distribution of safety communications, forms, policies, procedures, and training materials.
  • Help monitor employee training requirements and maintain accurate training records.
  • Assist with ordering and maintaining inventory of PPE, safety supplies, training materials, and other required items.
  • Participate in Health & Safety meetings and initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve, streamline, or digitize Health & Safety processes and documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with field supervisors, employees, and management to promote a positive and proactive safety culture.
  • Perform other Health & Safety duties and projects as assigned.

Human Resources – Approximately 20%

  • Assist with employee onboarding and offboarding, including documentation, orientation materials, checklists, and file updates.
    • Maintain organized and confidential employee personnel files and electronic records.
    • Assist with preparing employment-related documents, forms, and internal communications.
    • Support recruitment and hiring activities as required.
    • Assist with tracking employee documentation and ensuring records are complete and current.
    • Support employee training coordination and record management.
    • Assist with ordering employee supplies, apparel, materials, and other HR-related items.
    • Help identify opportunities to improve HR administrative processes through technology and better organization.
    • Provide general administrative support to the Human Resources team.
    • Assist with special HR projects and initiatives as required.

Travel

    • Ability to travel within Southwestern Ontario as required to attend both office locations, training and education.

Qualifications & Attributes

    • Currently enrolled, or a graduate from, in a post-secondary program in Occupational Health & Safety, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
    • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to keep multiple priorities, records, and follow-up items organized.
    • Curious and inquisitive mindset — willing to ask questions, learn how and why things are done, and seek a deeper understanding of issues.
    • Strong critical-thinking skills with the ability to assess information, recognize potential risks or gaps, and think beyond the immediate task.
    • A natural problem solver who takes initiative to investigate issues and develop practical solutions.
    • Highly tech-savvy and comfortable learning new software, systems, applications, and digital tools.
    • Interested in using technology, automation, and digital tools to improve efficiency and organization.
    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate records.
    • Comfortable working in both office and active job site/field environments.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Professional and comfortable interacting with employees, supervisors, and management.
    • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
    • Self-motivated, dependable, adaptable, and willing to take initiative.
    • Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to job sites as required is considered an asset.
