JOB PURPOSE:
The Senior Accountant, Student Financials Accounting supports the accurate accounting, reconciliation, and reporting of student-related financial transactions. This position is responsible for preparing the monthly student financial journal entries, completing complex reconciliations, performing detailed revenue and expense analyses, and ensuring compliance with GAAP and ASC 606. The Senior Accountant collaborates closely with the Manager to support the monthly close process, system improvements, and cross-departmental initiatives that strengthen student financial operations.

None.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include staff within the Controller’s Office, Bursar, Financial Aid, Registrar, Budget Office, and other departments within the university. External contacts include auditors, consultants, and system support partners.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Financial Oversight & Revenue Recognition
• Perform the accounting and reconciliation of student charges, payments, financial aid disbursements, and related deferrals in accordance with GAAP and ASC 606 revenue recognition standards.
• Prepare and maintain detailed balance sheet reconciliations for student financial accounts; research variances and escalate issues as needed.
• Assist with the calculation and documentation of the uncollectible reserves for student accounts.

• Reconcile student-related cash accounts and coordinate with the Bursar’s Office to resolve discrepancies in payment, refund, and posting processes.
• Support the monthly close process by preparing journal entries, accruals, and variance analyses for student revenue and expense accounts.
• Prepare audit schedules, documentation, and supporting workpapers for both internal and external audits.
Process Improvement & System Enhancements
• Identify process gaps and recommend enhancements to improve reconciliation accuracy, workflow efficiency, and data integrity.
• Assist with system updates, testing, and implementation related to student financials within ERP systems (e.g., Workday Student and Workday Finance).
• Document standard operating procedures and ensure adherence to internal controls and university policies.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
• Partner with the Bursar, Financial Aid, and Registrar’s Office to ensure accurate financial transactions and alignment of data across systems.
• Participate in cross-functional meetings and provide accounting insights related to student financial operations.
• Support the Manager in developing financial analysis, reporting, and presentations for university leadership.
Other Responsibilities
• Stay current on accounting standards, higher education financial practices, and regulatory updates affecting student accounts.
• Assist with special projects and perform other job-related duties as assigned.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, revenue recognition principles, and accounting practices within a higher education environment.
• Demonstrated experience in general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial analysis.
• Exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
Controller’s Office
Excellence in Truth and Service
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel; experience with enterprise accounting and student systems (e.g., Workday) preferred.
• High level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field required.
• Minimum of 4–5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in higher education or public accounting.
• Experience with ASC 606 or revenue accounting is strongly preferred.
• Workday or large ERP system experience strongly preferred.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and meet strict deadlines.
