Public Citizen seeks a strategic and organized self starter to serve as AI Governance and Tech State Policy Advocate. 

The Policy Advocate will work closely with the Campaign Director of State AI Governance and Tech Policy to put forth model state AI legislation to establish guardrails to protect the American people from a variety of AI abuses, from deepfake manipulation to chatbot deception. They will be a driving force in the advocacy to move critical legislation forward, including working with the Director to develop strategy and messaging, tracking the landscape of state AI and tech policy, and building and maintaining relationships with state lawmakers and other key partners on both sides of the aisle. 

The Policy Advocate will also work closely with colleagues and coalition partners on a variety of other efforts to address AI abuses and curb excessive corporate power and wealth concentration and rein in Big Tech.

We hold governments and corporations accountable through campaigns and advocacy before all branches of government on issues including money in politics, open government, financial regulation, fair trade, consumer protection, access to justice, workplace safety, and drug and medical device safety.

Responsibilities
  • State legislative advocacy.
    • Provide expertise on a variety of tech policy issues and legislative solutions.
    • Form and maintain relationships with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle.
    • Identify and engage in advocacy activities to support state legislation.
    • Create written resources to support advocacy efforts.
    • Draft and review legislative language.
    • Work with the Director to develop state legislative strategy.
    • Build a deep understanding of the AI legislative landscape and help identify areas for future legislative work.
    • Manage interns as needed.
  • Research and tracking.
    • Research issues in the area of AI and Big Tech.
    • Draft reports and other written products.
    • Draft and maintain internal and external legislative tracking resources.
  • Other advocacy. Support other advocacy efforts relating to AI and Big Tech including efforts to push back on federal preemption and to hold big tech accountable.
  • Coalition work. Build and maintain relationships with partner organizations and other key stakeholders in the AI and tech regulatory space
  • Media engagement. Respond to press inquiries, and help develop media strategies as needed.


Qualifications
  • College degree required.
  • 4+ years of relevant research and advocacy experience, with a preference given to those with specific expertise on AI and/or Big Tech platforms.
  • Exceptional analytic, research, and written and oral communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in coalitions and networks.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, respond to short-term deadlines and balance multiple responsibilities; maintain strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Collaborative, energetic, and mission-driven.
  • Ability to take initiative and drive projects from concept through completion.
  • Strong commitment to and interest in regulating and reining in big tech

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Competitive salary and generous benefit package. Below is a list of some of our benefits (please note that some benefits have eligibility requirements).  Salary range: $85,383 – 141,633
