Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and Health Center Director, the Medical Assistant provides essential patient care and clinical support in a community health center setting. As an integral member of the patient care team, the Medical Assistant works closely with healthcare providers and other health center staff to support safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.

The Medical Assistant is responsible for obtaining and documenting patient medical histories, vital signs, height, weight, and chief complaints; preparing patients and Electronic Health Records (EHR) for provider visits; assisting providers during examinations; performing routine clinical procedures; coordinating referrals and appointments; and supporting patient follow-up and discharge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain patient and Electronic Health Record (EHR) confidentiality.
  • Prepare patients and EHRs for provider visits and report special problems or complaints to the appropriate provider.
  • Assist healthcare providers during examinations and procedures as needed.
  • Accurately obtain and document vital signs, height, weight, chief complaints, and appropriate medical and social histories for adult and pediatric patients.
  • Perform routine laboratory and patient intake procedures, including standing orders, urine dipsticks, phlebotomy, finger and heel sticks, injections and immunizations, and EKGs.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of office and medical areas.
  • Proactively restock medical supplies and Family Planning resource center materials as needed.
  • Execute Pre-Visit Planning for primary providers and Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) teams.
  • Provide basic chronic disease health education to patients as appropriate.
  • Assist with processing referrals and scheduling appropriate patient appointments.
  • Obtain necessary authorizations and follow up to determine whether patients attended scheduled appointments.
  • Communicate with patients and assist with effective discharge.
  • Maintain required logs and complete routine safety and equipment checks, including refrigerator temperatures, eyewash stations, oxygen, and autoclave fluid changes and spore testing.
  • Maintain surgical instruments and properly clean and prepare instruments for sterilization.
  • Demonstrate professional and effective customer service with internal and external customers.
  • Follow Universal Precautions and Unity Health Care policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program with a diploma.
  • Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
  • Current BLS + AED CPR certification.
