Position SummaryĀ 

TheĀ communications associateĀ supports communications managers in promotingĀ the Center’s workĀ to the news media,Ā influential voices in new media spaces,Ā keyĀ stakeholdersĀ andĀ the engaged public.Ā They are involved in a range ofĀ activities that promote,Ā enhanceĀ and protect the organization’s ā€œgold-standardā€ brand reputation.Ā 

The communications associateĀ assists withĀ all aspects of external relations, playing a major supporting role inĀ theĀ promotion and dissemination ofĀ researchĀ findings through media relations, including legacy news outlets, podcasts, newsletters, and independent creators on social media platforms;Ā stakeholder engagement;Ā andĀ event planning, including briefings, presentations and panel discussions.Ā They are assigned to support the Center’s research teams on a rotating basis, offering broad exposure to the Center’s work and growth opportunities in all aspects of the communications field.Ā

TheĀ associateĀ is a member of theĀ 15-personĀ Strategic Communications team,Ā workingĀ alongside four other associates, collaboratingĀ closely withĀ all members of the team as well asĀ colleagues on the digital and audience teamsĀ and variousĀ research teams.Ā The associate reports to the Associate Director of Strategic Communications.  

This is a term-limited, grant-funded position expected to extend three years.

Primary ResponsibilitiesĀ 

The communications associate:Ā 

  • SupportsĀ communicationsĀ managers in outreachĀ effortsĀ forĀ researchĀ releases.Ā 

  • AssistsĀ in developing outreach plans for priorityĀ researchĀ publications andĀ supportsĀ implementation.Ā 

  • Serves asĀ an initialĀ point of contact for external inquiries, especially from members of the media, andĀ responds to incoming requests promptly,Ā accuratelyĀ and efficiently.Ā Ā 

  • CoordinatesĀ logisticsĀ for interviews and presentations for Center experts.Ā 

  • Creates,Ā updatesĀ andĀ maintainsĀ lists of media and other key contacts, expanding and diversifying our potential target audiences.Ā 

  • Maintains and updates collaborative platforms used to coordinate outreach activities, such as the editorial calendar.Ā 

  • StaysĀ up-to-dateĀ with current events and key conversations relevant to the research areas they support.Ā 

  • TracksĀ media coverageĀ and documents the results of outreach activities toĀ demonstrateĀ and summarize audience impact for institutional reporting purposes.Ā 

  • IdentifiesĀ themes and opportunities for follow-on visibility and proactive moments.Ā 

  • Participates in special projects and new initiatives in support of the Center’s mission.Ā 

  • Upholds the Center’s core values ofĀ independence, objectivity, accuracy, rigor, humility,Ā transparencyĀ and innovation.Ā 

Knowledge and Skill RequirementsĀ 

  • Demonstrated interest inĀ the Center’sĀ research topics, news, and current events.Ā 

  • Experience with traditional media relationsĀ as well asĀ the ability to keep up withĀ new trendsĀ in a rapidly evolving information ecosystem.Ā 

  • ExcellentĀ writing,Ā editingĀ and verbal communicationĀ skills.Ā 

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills andĀ a customer service mindset.  

  • Advanced self-organization skills and the ability to balance multiple time-sensitive priorities and deadlines.Ā 

  • Ability to work well both independently and inĀ a highly collaborativeĀ environment.Ā 

  • Attention to detail and precision inĀ communicating aboutĀ dataĀ andĀ numbers.Ā 

  • GoodĀ judgment, self-awarenessĀ and accountability.Ā

Education/Training/ExperienceĀ 

  • Bachelor’s degreeĀ required; communications, journalism,Ā social science, or related degree preferred.Ā 

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in external relations, including media relations.Ā 

  • Knowledge ofĀ U.S. public discourse and the U.S. media landscape.Ā 

  • Experience withĀ promoting content through social media and other digital channels.Ā 

  • ProficiencyĀ with media outreachĀ andĀ tracking tools likeĀ Salesforce,Ā Predictive,Ā Meltwater,Ā or similar platformsĀ such asĀ Cision,Ā MuckRackĀ and Mailchimp.Ā 

  • Experience managing contact databasesĀ such as SalesforceĀ 

  • Experience with collaborative project management platforms like Asana, Trello, or Basecamp.Ā 

  • ProficiencyĀ with MicrosoftĀ productivity softwareĀ (especiallyĀ Teams, Outlook,Ā Word, Excel, PowerPoint).Ā 

FLSA Status: ExemptĀ Ā 

Compensation:Ā The typical starting salary for this position is $70,000 annually,Ā commensurateĀ with experience.Ā Ā Ā 

Hybrid Work Schedule:Ā Pew Research Center staff are required to be present in the Center’s Washington, D.C., office three core days weekly (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).Ā  Staff may workĀ virtually fromĀ remote locations on other days in a typical work week.Ā Ā Ā Ā
