Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG) invites applications for a Communications Team Intern (Writing Focus) to join our Communications team. This position is a full-time, 40 hours per week, internship opportunity primarily remote with required in-person activities, including orientation in New Carrollton, Maryland, and weekly onsite work at the Capitol Hill regional office in Washington, D.C. Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group is comprised of more than 1,800 Permanente physicians and nearly 300 staff professionals who come together to make a positive impact on the health and lives of approximately 800,000 Kaiser Permanente members in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

Reporting to the Communications Team, the Communications Team Intern (Writing Focus) will support communications and public relations initiatives by developing written content that highlights physician expertise, healthcare insights, and organizational initiatives. This role provides hands-on experience working with communications professionals, physicians, and subject matter experts to create compelling content for digital platforms, publications, and public engagement activities. You will contribute to writing, research, and communications projects that strengthen MAPMG’s voice across internal and external channels.

You can expect to:

  • Develop written content for external websites, internal newsletters, and public relations materials.
  • Prepare articles, blogs, and news briefs that highlight physician expertise and healthcare initiatives.
  • Partner with communications professionals, physician subject matter experts, and spokespeople to research trending healthcare topics and develop engaging content.
  • Provide writing and editing support for multimedia projects, including podcast scripts, talking points, and interview materials.
  • Lead or assist with enhancing physician profiles on kp.org/doctor to improve online visibility and engagement.
  • Oversee or support communications logistics for physician speaking engagements, including scheduling, presentation development, and talking point preparation.

What is required:

  • Must be a current student enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in public relations, journalism, communications, marketing or a related field; Recent college graduates are ineligible for the internship program.
  • Must be available to work full-time, 40 hours a week.
  • Previous experience in writing, journalism, digital communications, or public relations is a plus.
  • Interest or coursework related to content creation, media relations, healthcare communications, or digital storytelling.
  • Technical skills: Strong writing and editing skills; experience with content management systems, presentation tools, or multimedia editing tools is a plus.
  • Design, photography, and video editing skills are preferred but not required.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to attend in-person orientation in New Carrollton, Maryland, and work onsite each Tuesday at the Capitol Hill regional office in Washington, D.C. [The day of the week and the frequency of in-office work is subject to change.]
  • Must be available for occasional offsite projects at medical centers in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
  • Candidates must either currently live in or be willing to relocate to the Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia metropolitan area.
  • Must provide documentation of the COVID-19 vaccine 2-dose series (or J&J 1-dose) prior to October 1, 2023, or documentation for 1-dose of the most current Covid vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as a condition of employment. Must provide documentation for the influenza vaccine as a condition of employment.

The starting hourly rate for this position ranges from $20.00 to $25.00, which considers an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and prior job experience, training, market data, and other relevant factors. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
