The Controller's Office is responsible for AARP's enterprise-wide accounting activities. This includes maintaining internal controls; compliance with federal, state, and other legal reporting requirements; grants management; revenue recognition; general ledger activity; accounts payable/receivable; payroll; tax; and procurement functions to include managing strategic outsourcing, contract negotiation and supplier management.
Responsibilities:
- Oversees and manages the preparation and consolidation of financial statements.
- Responds to inquiries from internal clients and researches and resolves concerns and/or discrepancies.
- Ensures financial applications are compliant with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other regulatory requirements.
- Supervises and reviews journal entries, reconciliations, and other work products generated by accountants.
- Serves as liaison with internal clients to gather and distribute financial information and ensure clients understand financial policies and the importance of compliance therewith.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting and CPA (Certified Public Accountant).
- Experience managing accounting operations, including transaction processing, month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, and compliance with internal accounting policies and GAAP.
- Experience leading and developing professional accounting staff, including goal setting, work assignment, coaching, performance feedback, and talent development.
- Experience supporting year-end financial audit, including preparing financial statements and disclosures that comply with GAAP.
- Advanced Excel skills.Â
Preferred:
- 5+ years of supervisory experience in an accounting department. 2+ years of public accounting experience.
- Experience working with ERP systems such as Peoplesoft or Oracle and financial reporting tools.
- Experience evaluating complex revenue contracts and applying ASC 606 guidance to determine proper accounting treatment.
