Optical Assistant – Full-time

 Job Summary: The Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington (POB) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the improvement and preservation of sight by providing services, education, advocacy, and innovation. POB programs address vision health equity in the D.C. Metropolitan community. POB is seeking a full-time Optical Assistant. Job Location; Capitol Hill, 5-minute walk from Union Station

Work Schedule: Minimum 40 hours per week

Salary Range: $43,000 – $46,000

Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional customer service to all age groups in mobile settings
  • Ensure measurements and prescription information are accurate before submitting to the lab for grinding, coating, and fitting lenses to the frames.
  • Engage in all steps of Patient/Customer eyeglass selection, fitting, ordering, and delivering lenses and eyewear
  • Assist patients in selecting the eyeglass frames, lenses and lens coatings that best suit their needs.
  • Assess and interpret patient’s needs/wants based upon prescription requirements, facial features, lifestyle, occupation, and suggest most appropriate products (i.e., frames, lens type, coatings)
  • Execute all related operational activities to meet the Site Manager’s goals for each location
  • Transport, setup, and breakdown equipment at events
  • Ensure all equipment in good working order
  • Track related inventory
  • Take necessary measurements (i.e., measuring the patient’s pupillary distance)
  • Accurately prepare work order for the lab and ensure all pertinent information is listed (i.e., patient information, prescription, lens size/type, measurements, special tinting, or coating, etc.)
  • Input customer information into computer system
  • Inspect final product for accuracy; adjust completed glasses to fit patient accordingly
  • Educate patient on how best to care for their glasses
  • Adjust/repair damaged frames, replace nose pads and missing screws
  • Maintain inventory
  • Maintain knowledge of organization policies regarding payment, exchanges, and returns
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of products
  • Follow HIPAA policies regarding confidentiality
  • Perform other duties and projects, as required

 Other Duties:

  •  Must be available to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 Qualifications:

  • US citizen
  • HS Diploma, or higher required
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience
  • Must have a valid driver’s license in the metro area (DC, MD or VA)
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Local travel required. 3 -5 days a week
  • Ability to learn in a fast-paced environment.
  • Works well in a team environment
  • Compensation will depend on experience
  • Excellent time management, prioritization, and organization skills
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and Google Suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent mathematical skills
  • Spanish-speaking is a plus
