The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of AASCU financial records and supporting accounting operations across Accounts Payable, Payroll, General Ledger, Grants, and Financial Reporting. This position supports close activities, supervises the Staff Accountant, supports audits, and drives process improvements. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES General Ledger & Month-End Close •   Prepare and post recurring and nonrecurring journal entries, including accruals, deferrals, allocations, prepaid expenses, depreciation, and other adjusting entries. •   Perform monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts, including cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accrued liabilities, deferred revenue, and other balance-sheet accounts. •   Research and resolve account discrepancies and reconciling items promptly. •   Support the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring assigned activities are completed accurately and on schedule. •   Review general ledger activity for proper coding, classification, and supporting documentation. •   Assist in preparing monthly financial statements, supporting schedules, and internal management reports. •   Maintain organized accounting records and documentation in accordance with the organization’s record-retention policies. Accounts Payable & Disbursements •   Reconcile the accounts payable subledger to the general ledger and investigate and resolve discrepancies. •   Prepare accounts payable analyses and supporting schedules for month-end close, audits, and financial reporting. Payroll Operations & Accounting •   Process and reconcile multi-state payroll in partnership with HR and the payroll provider. •   Reconcile payroll liability accounts and prepare payroll-related journal entries. Fixed Assets •   Maintain the fixed asset subledger. •   Prepare depreciation entries and reconcile fixed assets to the general ledger. •   Assist with periodic reviews and inventories of capital assets. Grant and Restricted Fund Accounting •    Assist with grant-related expenditures reviews for compliance. •    Prepare grant reconciliations, expenditure reports, invoices, and supporting schedules. Audit Support •    Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation. •    Coordinate audit requests and assist with audit analyses. •    Assist with Form 990 support schedules and compliance filings. Process Improvement and Systems Optimization •    Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes. •    Support optimization and utilization of Sage Intacct and other financial systems. •    Develop and maintain accounting procedures and process documentation. •    Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS •    Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent education. Certification desirable. •    5 years demonstrated experience in all aspects of accounts payable and payroll- preferably in a non-profit environment. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics/Great Plains strongly preferred. •    5 years demonstrated experience with full range of payroll-related activities. Experience with automated time and labor management and third-party payroll processing strongly preferred. •    Knowledge of GAAP. •    Understanding of all accounting and reporting requirements specific to the recipient of federal funds. •    Working knowledge of regulatory requirements and related reporting (e.g., Form 990, Form 941, Form 5500, etc). •    Strong user of technology as a tool for improving processing efficiency and communications. •    Ability to manage multiple activities and priorities •    Comfort with and ability to communicate across all levels of AASCU and with external AASCU stakeholders.  •    Understanding of member/donor-based operations and higher education, desirable. COMPENSATION, BENEFITS, AND LOCATION The salary range for this exempt position is between $85,000 and $100,000 plus a generous benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision insurance; fifteen paid holidays plus additional annual leave; above market contribution to company sponsored 403(b) retirement plan; on-site fitness facility, 24/7 building security, secured bike storage and more. Additionally, available underground public parking is accessible for all employees at their own expense.  This is a full-time position located at AASCU’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. AASCU employees who live within commuting distance to our offices are expected to work on a hybrid in-person work schedule of three days in the office and two days optional remote. This schedule is subject to change based on work and organizational demands.
