Overview
The Squires Group is seeking a VistA/MUMPS Sustainment Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide senior-level technical expertise supporting the sustainment, maintenance, and production operations of VistA-based applications. This role will serve as a technical resource for diagnosing and resolving complex production issues, leading root cause analysis, supporting defect resolution, and ensuring application stability and release readiness.

The ideal candidate will have significant hands-on experience with VistA and MUMPS, strong knowledge of VistA technical architecture and data structures, and a proven track record supporting legacy, mission-critical healthcare systems in production environments.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert technical guidance on VistA and MUMPS-based application sustainment, maintenance, and operations.
- Analyze, triage, and resolve complex VistA defects, incidents, service requests, and production issues.
- Perform root cause analysis across application code, data, configuration, workflow, interfaces, and technical environments.
- Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 production support, including incident prioritization, escalation, workaround identification, and resolution planning.
- Develop and review defect resolution plans, including remediation approach, code and data impacts, testing strategy, release considerations, and rollback planning.
- Support application testing, validation, release readiness, deployment planning, and post-release monitoring.
- Collaborate with developers, testers, product owners, release managers, operations teams, and government stakeholders to resolve technical issues and maintain application stability.
- Identify opportunities to improve sustainment processes, defect prevention, monitoring, backlog management, documentation, and knowledge transfer.
- Provide technical recommendations regarding application maintenance, data correction, configuration, and system performance.
- Document technical findings, root cause analyses, resolution approaches, and knowledge gained from production issues.
- Support modernization and continuous improvement efforts where legacy VistA functionality, architecture, or processes are being enhanced or transitioned.
Qualifications
- Significant hands-on experience supporting VistA sustainment, operations, maintenance, or modernization.
- Strong knowledge of MUMPS programming and VistA technical architecture.
- Experience working with VistA routines, globals, FileMan, data dictionaries, cross-references, and package dependencies.
- Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex production defects within legacy or mission-critical systems.
- Experience providing Tier 2/Tier 3 application support, ticket triage, incident management, and defect resolution.
- Experience working within structured software development, testing, release, and change management processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct root cause analysis across code, data, configuration, interfaces, and environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience supporting Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) systems or federal healthcare platforms.
- Familiarity with VA product-line delivery models and federal application sustainment practices.
- Experience with release management, Agile, DevSecOps, and federal compliance requirements.
- Experience with application monitoring, root cause analysis reporting, data correction, table maintenance, or legacy system modernization.
- Experience collaborating with government stakeholders and cross-functional technical teams in a federal environment.
- W2 Hourly rate starts at $90+/hour. Pay rates are based on experience and qualifications, and are subject to change at any time.
