Position: Camp Director          Salary$19.50          

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington is currently hiring Summer Camp Directors. Working at the Y, you will create exciting and impactful experiences for campers, build connections with your peers and Y professionals, expand your leadership skills, and have fun! This is a seasonal position for the months of June through August. 
 
Some of the exciting things you will do as a Camp Director: 

  • Ensure all campers have a fun, enriching, and safe experience
  • Plan and implement the Y camp program in accordance with the goals and policies of the Y and the camp curriculum
  • Provide leadership to camp counselors, including training and daily supervision
  • Mentor camp staff
  • Ensure daily schedule of activities is carried out for all groups of campers
  • Conduct weekly team meetings and provide performance feedback on a daily basis
  • Ensure that all counselors have daily schedule and the appropriate supplies and resources to deliver a quality program
  • Be responsible for camper safety and security
  • Ensure adherence to the policies of the Y
  • Motivate, energize and encourage counselors to deliver outstanding programming and customer service daily
  • Participate in staff trainings and meetings as required 

What you need to be a Camp Director:

  • Be able to work from the week before camp begins for training to the end of the final week of the season
  • High school graduate
  • 21 years of age
  • Willing to participate in and obtain CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Clear the local jurisdiction requirements for criminal background and/or fingerprinting
  • Meet the county/state licensing requirements
  • Y Day Camp Director certification/preferred 
  • At least three summers of experience in day camp, recreation, physical education, teaching, or working with school age children
  • Prior experience supervising staff
  • Work well with and in groups 
  • Able to effectively communicate with children and parents
  • Understand and be committed to working with all population and to Y character development

Physical requirements:

  • Must be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Must be physically active to play games and sports with the children
  • Must be able to pick-up at least 35 pounds
  • Must have visual acuity to observe all children
  • Documentation of physical examination and TB skin test

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibility: 

  • Assists the Program Director in the overall program development and implementation, the precamp orientation and training for staff and supervision of all day camp staff assigned to a particular camp or segment of camp 

  • Required to be on site all day during camp season and may be required to work before and after the camp season as deemed necessary 

  • Ensures staff to child ratios, lesson plans and daily schedules are in place and being followed 

 

Supervisory Responsibility: 

¨ No Supervisory responsibility   

¨ Provides guidance, leadership, or training to other employees (no direct supervision)  

X Directly responsible for supervising non-exempt, clerical, or office administration personnel 

¨ Directly responsible for supervising exempt, professional, or technical employees 

¨ Directly responsible for supervising supervisory/managerial employees

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Plans, supervises and implements the program in accordance with the goals and policies of the YMCA and the day camp curriculum 

  • Supervises and guide day camp staff and ensures that each carries out daily schedule of activites for all groups of campers 

  • Conducts weekly staff meetings and evaluates staff performance on a daily basis 

  • Reviews campers’ progress or problems, discusses with program director and with parents 

  • Responds to any parental concerns 

  • Ensures that all counselors have daily lesson plans and the appropriate supplies and program needs to deliver a quality program 

  • Responsible for each camper’s safety and security; ensures adherence to the policies of the YMCA 

  • Ensures that all staff and campers abide by the Aquatics Policies and Procedures related to camp programs 

  • Ensures communication with parents regarding their children’s experience 

  • Implement and regulate hourly head counts of children by group on a daily basis 

  • Ensures all campers emergency records are complete with copies made available to lead counselors 

  • Motivate, energize and encourage counselors to deliver outstanding programming and customer service daily 

  • Conducts post-camp evaluation at the end of each camp session 

  • Prepares an evaluation of camp and staff 

  • Other duties as required

Education, Certification, Skills, and Experience: 

  • High school diploma 

  • Must be 21 years of age

* The YMCA requires that all camp staff attend a minimum of 20 hours of training prior to the start of summer camp and that it be documented in personnel files.
