Position: Lifeguard         Pay Rate: $18.40 per hour  

 

 

The YMCA Anthony Bowen is part of the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, a community-focused nonprofit dedicated to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

As a Lifeguard, you'll play an important role in creating a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable aquatic environment for all pool participants. You'll gain valuable experience, develop leadership skills, and work as part of a supportive team. Lifeguard, CPR, and AED certification training may be provided by the YMCA.

About the Role

The Lifeguard is responsible for supervising aquatic activities, preventing accidents, enforcing safety rules, and responding quickly and effectively to emergencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise pool activities and maintain constant awareness of participants.
  • Enforce pool rules and YMCA water safety policies.
  • Respond to emergencies and perform rescues, CPR, and first aid as needed.
  • Follow emergency action plans and communicate effectively during incidents.
  • Inspect pool areas, equipment, and water conditions for safety.
  • Perform routine water testing, cleaning, and pool maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate water quality and incident records.
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming aquatic environment.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old and able to swim.
  • Current lifeguard certification preferred; YMCA training may be available.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Reliable, attentive, and able to remain focused for extended periods.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, families, and adults.
  • Ability to respond calmly and appropriately in emergency situations.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must meet YMCA lifeguarding prerequisites, including the ability to:

  • Swim 500 yards continuously.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only.
  • Retrieve a submerged training victim from deep water.
  • Perform active and passive victim rescues using a rescue tube.
  • Perform backboard rescues.
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Visually and audibly monitor pool participants for distress or assistance.
