Amentum is seeking a trained and safety‑focused Hazardous Waste Responder to support emergency response and hazardous materials management activities in the Washington, DC area. This role is responsible for safely identifying, containing, and cleaning up hazardous materials spills or releases across various sites.

The Hazardous Waste Responder follows strict safety protocols, uses specialized personal protective equipment (PPE), and ensures compliance with federal, state, local, and Department of State (DOS) regulations—all while prioritizing the protection of human health and the environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, assess, and contain hazardous materials spills, releases, or contamination incidents.
  • Perform cleanup operations using approved methods, specialized tools, and appropriate PPE.
  • Follow strict health and safety procedures, including HAZMAT response protocols and industry standards.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and DOS environmental and safety regulations.
  • Participate in emergency response drills, preparedness activities, and ongoing training.
  • Document spill response activities, incident details, hazards identified, and corrective actions taken.
  • Assist with the handling, packaging, labeling, and transport of hazardous or radioactive materials as needed.
  • Conduct post‑incident evaluations to determine root causes and recommend future prevention measures.
  • Work collaboratively with environmental, safety, and facility teams to maintain readiness for emergency situations.
  • Maintain equipment, PPE, and response tools to ensure operational readiness.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Hazardous Waste Responder or in HAZMAT emergency response.
  • Knowledge of federal and state environmental laws (e.g., EPA, DOT, OSHA, RCRA).
  • Experience using Level A–D PPE and responding to chemical, hazardous, or unknown material releases.
  • Strong understanding of spill containment, decontamination procedures, and waste disposition.
  • Ability to work in potentially hazardous environments while following established safety procedures.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT).

Preferred Qualifications

  • HAZWOPER 40‑hour certification (preferred or ability to obtain).
  • Experience working in Department of State (DOS), federal, or high‑security environments.
  • Additional certifications in hazardous materials emergency response or incident command (ICS/NIMS).
  • Experience with environmental monitoring instruments (e.g., PID, FID, radiation detectors, gas monitors).

       

Compensation Details:

$115,000-$122,000
