BlueScope Recycling is a full-service, ferrous scrap metal recycler with processing facilities in Waterloo, IN, Delta, OH, and Mansfield, OH. BlueScope Recycling buys scrap from industrial generators, wholesale suppliers, and the general public, focusing on delivering the highest level of service.
Summary: The Retail Scrap Facility Manager is the frontline leader of our public-facing scrap purchasing operations. This role balances high-volume operational efficiency with strong commodity buying discipline, accurate grading, and exceptional customer service.
The Manager leads the facility team to ensure safe, compliant, and profitable operations while providing a fair, fast, and transparent experience for all retail “over-the-scale” customers. This role is accountable for throughput, safety, material upgrades, ERP accuracy, payment integrity, and operational standards across both indoor non-ferrous processing and outdoor ferrous/bulk non-ferrous staging.

Retail Buying & Commercial Operations
- Manage daily purchasing of ferrous and non‑ferrous materials from the public and commercial sellers.
- Monitor market trends (LME/COMEX) to support competitive pricing while protecting margin.
- Ensure accurate grading and material upgrades; oversee staging and preparation for outbound shipments.
- Lead buyers and scale operators to deliver accurate, consistent transactions.
Operational Execution (Indoor & Outdoor)
- Oversee ferrous receiving, inspection, staging, and loading.
- Direct non‑ferrous sorting, wire stripping, depollution, and hazardous materials handling.
- Optimize material flow, eliminate bottlenecks, and align staffing to throughput needs.
Customer Experience & Transaction Speed
- Ensure fast, fair, professional service from arrival to payment.
- Design and maintain efficient customer flow to minimize wait times.
- Resolve customer disputes and train staff in communication and de‑escalation.
- Maintain clean, welcoming public areas.
Safety & Risk Management
- Enforce strict traffic patterns, equipment separation, PPE use, and hazardous screening.
- Lead daily safety walk‑throughs, conduct audits, and manage incident reporting and root‑cause analysis.
- Maintain safe pedestrian routes and warehouse/yard exclusion zones.
Housekeeping & Facility Standards (5S)
- Maintain 5S standards across all processing and retail zones.
- Ensure labeled, organized, and hazard‑free staging areas; keep scales and equipment clean and inspection‑ready.
- Drive a professional facility appearance suited for a public‑facing operation.
Compliance, Security & Theft Prevention
- Enforce scrap‑theft prevention laws, ID capture, and required documentation.
- Monitor surveillance, fraud‑prevention controls, and payment integrity.
- Train staff to identify restricted or potentially stolen materials.
Technology, ERP & Payment Systems
- Ensure accurate transaction entry, ticketing, and inventory control in RIMAS.
- Maintain kiosk functionality and adherence to standardized workflows.
- Execute modern payment methods (ACH, reloadable debit cards, and backup options).
- Use dashboards to monitor throughput, wait times, labor efficiency, and exceptions.
People Leadership
- Hire, train, coach, and manage Retail Leads, Buyers/Scale Operators, Equipment Operators, and Laborers.
- Maintain cross‑training for coverage and fraud prevention.
- Deliver performance feedback, corrective action, and hands‑on training using SOPs and visual standards.
Required Qualifications:
- 3+ years’ experience in scrap, recycling, metals, or industrial operations leadership
- Strong understanding of retail scrap flow and customer-facing operations
- Proven ability to lead hourly teams and enforce standards
- Strong safety mindset and ability to enforce non-negotiables
- Experience with scale operations, ticketing, and customer transactions
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior retail scrap yard management experience
- Strong non-ferrous grading knowledge (copper/brass/aluminum)
- Experience using ERP systems (RIMAS preferred)
- Experience with ACH/debit payment workflows
- Lean/5S experience and KPI-driven management style
Quantitative Scope:
- No budget responsibility
- 5-10 hourly direct reports
