Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Volunteer Camp Nurse will play a critical role in creating a safe, fun, and health-focused camp environment for all campers and staff. This individual will provide first aid, manage medications, oversee health-related needs, and contribute to the camp's mission of fostering a vibrant, inclusive community. We’re looking for someone who is energetic, fun, and shares our passion for the YMCA’s mission to build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


 1. Health and Safety Management:

  • Administer first aid and basic medical care for campers and staff.
  • Monitor health conditions and provide care to individuals with chronic or acute medical needs.
  • Store, manage, and administer medications in accordance with camp policies and regulations.

2. Emergency Care and Preparedness:

  • Respond to medical emergencies promptly and appropriately, coordinating with emergency services when necessary.
  • Develop and communicate emergency health protocols for the camp community.

3. Health Records and Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date health records for all participants.
  • Document all medical treatments, incidents, and concerns.

4. Collaboration and Education:

  • Partner with camp staff to integrate health practices into daily activities.
  • Promote healthy habits such as hydration, hygiene, and sun safety.

5. Camper and Staff Support:

  • Provide guidance and reassurance to campers and staff regarding health concerns.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about any significant health-related incidents.

6. Engagement in Camp Life:

  • Participate in camp activities to build trust and rapport with campers.
  • Be an active, energetic member of the camp team, contributing to the fun and mission-driven environment.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:


Licensure & Professional Experience

  • Current and active Registered Nurse (RN) license or higher in good standing.
  • Experience in pediatric, emergency, or urgent care preferred.
  • Knowledge of pediatric health practices and experience administering medications and managing youth health care plans.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or ability to obtain before camp)

 Health & Safety Leadership

  • Strong commitment to camper and staff health, safety, and well-being.
  • Ability to assess and respond to common camp injuries and illnesses.
  • Experience with health documentation and electronic health systems (e.g., CampDoc) or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of youth protection practices, including mandated reporting and appropriate boundaries.

 Operational & Environmental Expectations

  • Ability to work outdoors and travel throughout camp to respond to health needs.
  • Physically able to walk camp terrain, access program areas, and conduct follow-up visits.
  • Ability to remain calm and responsive in a fast-paced camp environment.

Schedule & Residential Requirement

  • Ability to reside on-site during camp sessions (typically Sunday through Friday).
  • Participation in orientation, health center preparation, and end-of-week health documentation as needed.

YMCA Camp Kirkwood operates in accordance with American Camping Association (ACA) standards, and the Camp Nurse plays a key role in maintaining those high standards of health care and camper safety. 


YMCA SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
CPR & First Aid – Must be able to complete and maintain certification in CPR and First Aid; able to assist individuals in need until professional help arrives.

Emergency Response – Ability to quickly identify emergency situations (medical, fire, environmental, etc.) and respond appropriately following established procedures.

Incident Management – Required to report all safety incidents and hazards immediately and accurately to supervisors.

Safe Environment – Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and hazard-free environment for all staff, members, and participants.

Physical Readiness – Must be able to perform physical tasks related to safety, including assisting individuals of various ages and physical abilities.

Compliance – Follow all YMCA safety protocols, OSHA standards, and state/local regulations as applicable.
