Summary

Responsible for the operation, maintenance and repairs of the central utility plant, emergency power system, HVAC building automation system, waste water monitoring system, and the water testing/treatment program. Responsible for assigned ancillary service areas, which may include, but are not limited to, safety, environmental services, infection control, communications, and emergency preparedness.

Job Description

Provides work direction and supervision to power plant operators, mechanics and contractors, maintenance, and ancillary service areas. Coordinates operations, maintenance, repairs and equipment installations in accordance with the service goals and objectives. Provides professional and technical expertise. Works with federal, city and state officials to ensure compliance of regulated or permitted items that affect the central utility plant. Troubleshoots emergency power systems, high pressure boilers, chillers, cooling towers, water softeners, water analysis, and water treatment. Assists in the planning process and coordinates contractors during plant expansions and upgrades. Creates and updates work schedules, procedures, preventive maintenance system and all required engineering logs, records and reports. Coordinates with state boiler inspection program for annual boiler inspection. Oversees all operations of steam production, chilled water production and emergency/standby power production. Assists in outreach projects at other facilities in areas of expertise. Coordinates fire sprinkler system inspections and repairs. Interviews, hires, onboards, trains, coaches, disciplines, and terminates employees, if needed. Approves all time cards and time off requests. Submits yearly departmental budget. Requires HVAC building automation system experience in system programming, CAD design and operational capabilities. Required to maintain underground storage tank certification and smoke certification for Method 9. Must have knowledge of federal, state, and local codes, specifications, and ordinances, as well as Sanford Health policies and procedures. Utilizes skills in planning, organizing, delegating and supervising. Knowledge of standard office machinery including computer systems and applications. Must have ability to take initiative and to exercise independent judgment, decision-making and problems solving expertise. Leadership ability, good communication and change management skills essential. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Qualifications

Associate’s Degree, Trade or Vo-Tech school in related area required. Will consider 4 years of relevant work experience in place of education requirement.


Five years' experience and working knowledge of power plant equipment and operations, plumbing, heating, refrigeration and building automation operations required. Two years' supervisory experience preferred.


Valid driver's license required. Must maintain good driving record.

Class B Boiler license preferred.
