Position Summary
The Respiratory Therapist provides cardiopulmonary care and life‑support services to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system. This position performs diagnostic testing, administers physician‑ordered treatments, documents care in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and participates in departmental quality improvement activities. The role supports acute‑care operations and requires strict adherence to West Virginia laws, regulations, and facility policies.
Welch Community Hospital is the only acute care hospital in McDowell County. It is a crucial health care provider for the citizens of McDowell and many surrounding rural counties. This hospital provides a wide scope of care and services.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Respiratory Care (COARC) approved Respiratory Therapy program with a minimum of an associate’s degree.
Current West Virginia State License for Respiratory Therapy.
Current certifications in CPR, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in an acute care setting.
Ability to meet all federal, state, and facility requirements for direct care staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Administer respiratory care treatments and therapeutic interventions as ordered by the treating physician(s).
Perform diagnostic tests of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems to support physician diagnosis and treatment planning.
Provide life‑support services and respond to emergent cardiopulmonary needs within the facility.
Document all assessments, treatments, and patient responses in the EMR in accordance with facility policies and common practice.
Maintain equipment, supplies, and work areas in compliance with safety and infection‑control standards.
Participate in departmental Performance Improvement and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
Collaborate with nursing, medical staff, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated patient care.
Follow all facility protocols, policies, and procedures, including security and access requirements.
Work Schedule & Conditions
Assignments and weekly hours will be determined by the facility.
Shifts exceeding six (6) hours include a 30‑minute unpaid meal break.
Holiday and overtime pay are compensated at 1.5× the regular hourly rate for approved holidays worked.
Staff must comply with facility supervision, reporting structure, and performance expectations.
The facility reserves the right to remove or discontinue any assigned personnel at its sole discretion.
Reporting & Documentation
Complete timely and accurate documentation in the EMR.
Participate in required reporting, audits, and compliance reviews.
Support quarterly reconciliation reporting as required by the contract (hours worked, classification, location, etc.).
