 Application Development Manager

What to expect in this role on a given day:

The Application Development Manager oversees the daily operations of a small, high-performing development team responsible for building, enhancing, and maintaining business-critical applications. This role ensures that functional requirements are clearly understood, development work is well-organized, and delivery aligns with established standards and timelines. The manager partners closely with a Business Analyst/Project Manager to translate business needs into actionable technical work and to maintain a predictable, efficient sprint cadence.

Team Leadership & Daily Management

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and support to a small, highly productive team of application developers.
  • Assign and prioritize work, monitor progress, and remove blockers to ensure timely delivery.
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and professional development planning.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and growth-oriented team culture.

Project Coordination & Requirements Management

  • Partner with the Business Analyst/Project Manager to review, clarify, and refine functional requirements.
  • Translate business needs into clear technical tasks and ensure developers understand scope and expectations.
  • Participate in backlog grooming, sprint planning, and sprint reviews to maintain alignment and transparency.
  • Ensure work is estimated accurately and delivered within agreed-upon timelines.

Sprint & Workflow Management

  • Organize and manage sprints, ensuring tasks are well-defined, prioritized, and appropriately assigned.
  • Track sprint progress, identify risks, and communicate status to stakeholders.
  • Promote Agile best practices and help the team continuously improve sprint execution.

Process Improvement & Technology Optimization

  • Evaluate current development tools, workflows, and technologies to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Recommend and implement enhancements that increase developer efficiency, code quality, and maintainability.
  • Stay informed on industry trends and emerging technologies relevant to the team’s work.

SDLC Governance

  • Enforce a standardized Software Development Lifecycle across all projects.
  • Ensure adherence to coding standards, documentation requirements, testing practices, and release processes.
  • Collaborate with QA, infrastructure, and security teams to maintain high-quality, stable deployments.


Qualifications that will make you a good fit for this position:

Required

  • 5+ years of experience in software development, with at least 2 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and sprint-based delivery.
  • Experience working with business analysts, project managers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Solid grasp of modern development practices, version control, CI/CD, and application lifecycle management.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred

  • Experience managing small to mid-sized development teams.
  • Background in evaluating and implementing development tools or process improvements.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms, DevOps practices, or enterprise application environments.
  • Ability to mentor developers and promote a culture of continuous learning.
