Description

We are seeking a dependable and experienced Planer Operator to join our lumber mill team. This position is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining planer equipment to produce high-quality finished lumber according to grade and customer specifications. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical skills, understands lumber grading standards, and prioritizes safety and efficiency in a production environment.

Key Responsibilities

Set up and operate planer machines to meet production and quality standards
Adjust planer settings for thickness, width, and surface finish
Monitor lumber flow and identify defects or quality issues
Ensure finished lumber meets grade specifications
Inspect equipment daily and perform routine maintenance and knife changes
Troubleshoot mechanical and production issues
Maintain accurate production reports
Work closely with graders, stacker operators, and maintenance staff
Follow all safety policies and OSHA regulations
Maintain a clean and organized work area

Qualifications

2+ years of experience operating a planer in a lumber mill environment
Strong understanding of lumber dimensions, grades, and moisture content
Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor equipment repairs
Ability to work in a fast-paced, industrial setting
Willingness to work shifts, overtime, and weekends as needed
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of NeLMA grading rules
Experience with automated planer lines and optimization systems
Forklift or loader experience
