JUNIOR ACCOUNTANT

DEPARTMENT: FINANCE


GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Work involves preparation of journal entries, support of Finance Management, extraction of data from accounting systems to support analysis, spread-sheeting and general accounting duties.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direction of the Director of Finance or his/her Designee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares journal entries as directed for posting to various City funds and submits them to Assistant Finance Director (or designee) for approval prior to posting.
  • Review and Reconcile Procurement-Card statement vs. receipts. Prepare journal entries for approval.
  • Posts approved journal entries in the accounting system.
  • Undertakes special Finance Department projects as may be assigned by the Director of Finance or the Assistant Director of Finance or his/her designee. Projects may include but are not limited to Preparation of reports from the accounting system, Creation of spreadsheets to analyze or report data, Research and analysis of historical spending, Vendor PO/Invoice Analysis.
  • Maintains Journal Entry Log, Journal Entry Books, and other related Files.
  • Ensures Accounts Payable files are kept orderly and complete.
  • Provides support to ensure auditors receive requested documents in a timely manner.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of general and municipal accounting.
  • Knowledge of computer spreadsheet and accounting applications. (Munis and Excel preferred)
  • Ability to perform a variety of accounting procedures,
  • Ability to maintain orderly filing and record keeping systems.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks despite interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers within and outside the Finance Department.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor's degree in accounting from a recognized college or university, some work experience in a municipal setting is preferred.

Computer, calculator, and standard office equipment.
