The Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic is a pivotal role, responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, and executing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic repairs on various heavy equipment in the field. This role demands proficiency in operating industry-specific machinery while ensuring all assigned tasks are completed accurately and within specified timelines.


Whitaker Construction, founded in 1953, has over 70 years of experience in the heavy civil and underground utility construction industry. Whitaker, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company, has become one of the largest contractors in the intermountain area with more than 600 employees and nearly 70 crews. We perform sanitary sewer, storm drain, culinary water, irrigation, earthwork, roadway construction, dams, landfills, natural gas pipelines, industrial piping, and telecommunication projects primarily in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

Including but not limited to the list below

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues in heavy equipment.
  • Maintain and rebuild diverse construction machinery.
  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment using specialized tools.
  • Assess parts for wear and damage.
  • Repair or replace major components within engines, transmissions, steering, etc.
  • Conduct repairs within cooling, braking, steering, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Test overhauled equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Utilize welding, brazing, and fabricating techniques for equipment modification or repair.
  • Document work orders, warranty information, and maintain accurate time sheets.
  • Continuously learn and improve technical skills through training sessions.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED; vocational training preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a heavy equipment mechanic or equivalent.
  • Class A or Class B CDL and valid Medical Card per DOT standards are required.
  • Ability to manage personal tools and parts inventory.
  • Proficiency in safely operating and diagnosing various equipment.
  • Strong comprehension of technical manuals, schematics, and drawings.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft products, smartphones, and iPads.
  • Proficiency in Web based parts catalogs and ordering
  • Eagerness to learn and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Team player and Safety cutler minded in daily work activities 
  • Proficient in operation and application of mobile mechanic truck crane
  • Familiar with work practices in rigging application with mechanic truck operations. 

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Flexibility to work extended hours, including nights and weekends as needed.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks such as lifting, reaching, stooping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, and lifting up to 60 pounds.
  • Adaptability to outdoor work environments, weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job-related hazards.
  • Willingness to engage in strenuous physical labor.
