Worthington Enterprises is hiring a Design Engineer. The Design Engineer will lead efforts to outperform good competition by understanding customer needs and issues and by creating innovative designs that exceed customer expectations. The Designer should understand the customer, and to deliver concepts, detailed design, prototypes, testing, and ultimately a high-quality product with the aid of the team. The role may also incorporate some project management along the way. We are looking for candidates who are excited to provide input on product and business strategies and evaluate potential partnerships and acquisitions.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers product concepts that achieve a balance between proven technology and existing systems, and new innovations that address customer needs.
  • Provides hands on detailed product design and prototype testing that ensure customer needs are understood and met, best in class quality is achieved, and the proper balance of timing, cost, and functionality is made. This is done with the assistance of design team and CAD Techs.
  • Makes periodic visits to experience the customer’s operations.
  • Makes observations that lead to insights into the customer’s needs that can be addressed by Worthington.
  • Develops key manufacturing assets necessary to execute a product launch with an eye towards achieving market leading cost and quality.
  • Provides project management and communication to executive leadership, sales, marketing, manufacturing, purchasing, quality, suppliers, design team, etc.
  • Provides technical input on potential partnerships or acquisitions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Experience

  • Ability to improve upon existing competitor products, and to suggest new to world products
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of design
  • Ability to creatively use various processes and design to exceed functional expectations without overdesigning
  • Feel for rapid prototyping and experimentation to bring failures forward, and to get customer feedback early on
  • Ability to build a plan, identify risks and persevere through inevitable failures that occur in new product development
  • Ability to estimate total cost of design vs. customer willingness to pay to create value for customers
  • Familiarity with regulatory specifications (e.g. ASME section VIII, DOT 4L, etc.)
  • General knowledge of CAD/CAM, geometric dimensions and tolerances, Finite Element Analysis
