Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer with strong skills in dynamic system modeling and controls development. This role involves end-to-end real-time controls development, including controller architecture design, dynamic system simulation in both instantaneous and RMS domains, implementation, and field testing. The position is highly interdisciplinary and demands a strong technical foundation in three-phase power systems, power flow, and inverter modeling for grid-connected and off-grid applications.

In this role, you will be a key contributor to the development and maintenance of dynamic simulation models for our energy storage products used in both grid-connected and off-grid applications. You will leverage these models to design control strategies and perform a wide range of system studies to ensure compliance with project specifications.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain models of energy storage systems, inverters, generators, and renewables for dynamic and steady-state grid interconnection studies.
  • Develop control algorithms to manage the optimal control of various generation resources including battery, PV, and gas-powered gensets.
  • Perform simulation studies to investigate interactions between different generation resources in terms of stability and performance in off-grid and grid-connected operations.
  • Maintain excellent documentation of simulation reports and system studies, and give presentations to internal stakeholders and customers.
  • Interface with sales engineering, program management, project management, and project engineers to collect project modeling requirements.

Key Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required:

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on control theory, power systems, electrical machines, and/or power electronics.
  • Minimum of 3 years of dynamic system modeling experience using MATLAB, PSCAD, PSS/E, or similar software.
  • Knowledge of inverter operation and control.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Ability to interface well with internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrated history of delivering quality products to market with understanding and respect for all phases of the product development process, especially requirements, specification development, and release control.

Preferred:

  • Expertise creating detailed models of battery energy storage systems, generators, power electronics converters, gas turbines, and electrical networks and components.
  • Experience with ISO/RTO regulation and requirements (ERCOT, CAISO, MISO, PJM).
  • Experience with NERC standards and NERC compliance that applies to grid interconnection requirements.
  • Familiarity with IEEE 1547 and IEEE 2800 interconnection standards.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Linux environments for controls algorithm development and testing
  • Experience with version control systems (Git) and collaborative software development workflows.
