Job Title: Thermal Spray Technician
Classification: Full-time, Hourly Non-Exempt
Reports To: Production Supervisor
Location: Kymera – CASL Houston, TX - Onsite
Job Overview:
The Thermal Spray Technician will support the preparation and application of thermal spray coatings to various metals, including propulsion shafts and hydraulic rods. The ideal candidate should have experience with machining, particularly lathe operations, and should be familiar with different types of metals. Knowledge of using precision measuring tools, such as micrometers, is necessary, with a willingness to expand these skills further. A background in machine shop assistance, such as a lower-level machinist or a sandblaster, will offer valuable transferrable skills. The role demands a high level of attention to detail, exceptional attendance and punctuality, and the flexibility to thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.Â
Responsibilities:
- Independently perform thermal spray operations with minimal supervision while maintaining safety and quality standards.
- Set up, adjust, and optimize spray parameters according to work orders and production requirements to ensure coating quality and consistency.
- Demonstrate knowledge of thermal spray materials, coating characteristics, and appropriate application methods.
- Read and interpret customer blueprints, technical drawings, and process specifications.
- Program and modify robotic spray paths where applicable to support accurate coating application.
- Adjust spray gun distance, angle, and material flow to achieve optimal coating performance.
- Measure coating thickness using appropriate instruments and make real-time process adjustments as needed.
- Utilize advanced inspection and measurement equipment to verify coating quality.
- Produce and evaluate test samples to validate process parameters and coating performance.
- Accurately complete and document work orders and production records.
- Troubleshoot routine operational issues and perform minor equipment repairs as needed.
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks independently in accordance with maintenance schedules.
- Identify and correct operational inefficiencies during production.
- Identify process inefficiencies and recommend improvements to enhance productivity and quality.
- Detect coating defects and assist in determining root causes.
- Support the development and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Contribute to initiatives aimed at reducing rework and improving first-pass yield.
- Optimize equipment setup time and workflow efficiency.
- Adjust process parameters to improve deposition efficiency and coating uniformity.
- Support tooling life extension and equipment performance initiatives.
- Participate in Kaizen events and continuous improvement projects.
- Analyze process and production data to improve repeatability and process consistency.
- Manage assigned responsibilities independently while supporting overall team production goals.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to team members when needed.
- Train and mentor Level 1 Thermal Spray Technicians on procedures, equipment operation, and best practices.
- Work with limited supervision while escalating complex technical issues appropriately.
- Promote a strong culture of safety, quality, and operational excellence.
- Documentation & Standardization
- Maintain accurate and complete documentation of work orders, production records, and inspection results.
- Recommend updates and improvements to procedures and work instructions.
- Assist in maintaining and adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Record and document preventive maintenance activities.
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company standards, industry best practices, and customer specifications.

Requirements
Required Skills and Abilities:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical certification in materials science, manufacturing, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in thermal spray operations or related coating processes.
- Hands-on experience with spray guns, automated/robotic spray cells, and thermal spray consoles.
- Experience in reading and interpreting work orders, technical drawings, and process specifications.
- Exposure to quality assurance practices and basic troubleshooting in a production environment.
- Proficient in operating and adjusting thermal spray equipment and understanding spray parameters.
- Knowledge of coating materials, thickness requirements, and deposition efficiency.
- Ability to perform visual and dimensional inspections and identify coating defects.
- Understanding of machine maintenance, including nozzle/torch care and preventive maintenance.
- Skilled in identifying process inefficiencies and implementing minor adjustments.
- Familiarity with measuring instruments and quality control procedures.
- Able to train and mentor less experienced technicians.
- Communicates effectively with team members, quality personnel, and production leads.
- Demonstrates accountability for process outcomes and product quality.
- Capable of providing constructive feedback and supporting a collaborative work environment.
- Documents process parameters, deviations, and inspection results accurately.
- Supports standardization of work procedures and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Able to read, understand, and implement written procedures, safety protocols, and quality standards.
- Assists in procedure updates and Kaizen initiatives to reduce cycle time, scrap, and rework.

Education and Experience:
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in thermal spray operations or related coating processes.
- Hands-on experience with spray guns, automated/robotic spray cells, and thermal spray consoles.

- Exposure to quality assurance practices and basic troubleshooting in a production environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive manual tasks for extended periods.
- Strength to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds unassisted, repeatedly throughout a shift.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching overhead, and climbing ladders or stairs, as needed.
- Capability to pass a respiratory medical evaluation, including hearing and vision exams, and meet all necessary physical qualifications.
- Ability to wear and work comfortably in required personal protective equipment (PPE), including a full-face respirator or helmet PAPR (Powered Air-Purifying Respirator), protective coveralls, gloves, and steel-toe boots, for prolonged periods.
- Adaptability to safely work in diverse environments, such as high temperatures, confined spaces, and areas with potential exposure to dust, fumes, and noise.
- Coordination and manual dexterity to safely operate machinery, tools, and equipment while maintaining focus on ergonomics and safety.
