We’re hiring a Sr. Design Engineer to join County Prestress in Westmont, IL

Job Summary:
The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for the structural design, analysis, and project management of precast and prestressed concrete systems. This role leads engineering calculations, oversees shop drawings, supports production, and ensures compliance with ACI, PCI, and IBC standards.

You’ll act as a technical leader, mentoring junior engineers, driving innovation, and improving engineering processes, tools, and efficiency. This position plays a key role in delivering safe, high-quality, and cost-effective structural solutions.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform advanced structural analysis and design for precast and prestressed concrete components and systems
  • Manage multiple engineering projects through design, submittal, production, and construction phases
  • Prepare, review, and seal structural calculations and shop drawings (reinforcement, connections, erection, transport)
  • Ensure designs comply with ACI, PCI, IBC, and local building codes
  • Lead engineering calculations, reviews, and QA/QC processes
  • Develop value engineering solutions and optimize design for cost, efficiency, and constructability
  • Create camber control plans, lifting/handling strategies, and shipping solutions
  • Review submittals and resolve non-conformances and technical issues
  • Collaborate with project managers, drafters, architects, contractors, and production teams
  • Serve as a technical liaison for customers and internal stakeholders
  • Support sales and estimating teams with design expertise and bid development
  • Lead research & development of new precast/prestressed products
  • Develop and improve engineering tools, templates, and calculation software workflows
  • Mentor and supervise junior engineers, designers, and interns
  • Provide field and plant support for prestressing operations, lifting devices, and production challenges

Experience & Qualifications: (Required or Preferred)

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or Structural Engineering (master’s preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience in structural engineering, with a focus on precast/prestressed concrete design
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; ability to obtain multi-state licensure and/or Illinois Structural Engineer (SE)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, RISA-3D, Concise, or similar structural analysis software
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) preferred
  • Strong knowledge of PCI standards and precast fabrication methods
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage deadlines, multiple priorities, and fast-paced projects
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and production facilities as needed

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Direct experience with precast concrete design and detailing
  • Advanced expertise in PCI design standards and fabrication processes
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams and mentoring staff
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and clients

 

Work Environment:

This role includes time in the office, production facilities, and active construction sites. Exposure may include noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, and variable weather conditions typical of construction environments.
