Responsible for providing clinical perfusion and/or operation of cell saver to insure age specific patient care that includes pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Under the administrative supervision of the Executive Director and the clinical supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeon, operating surgeon and/or cardiac anesthesiologist, the perfusionist is responsible for providing safe and effective cardiopulmonary bypass for patients, addressing age specific needs, requiring open heart procedures and/or cell saver. Must operate and demonstrate knowledge of the physiological effect of the following systems:1) Cardiopulmonary Bypass
2) Left and Right Ventricular Assist Devices (if applicable)
3) Autotransfusion Devices
4) Coagulation Study Devices
5) Hemofiltration Devices
6) Cardioplegia Delivery Systems
7) Blood Flow Measuring Devices
8) Pressure Monitoring Devices
9) Hemoglobin Measuring Devices
10) Heater/Cooler Devices
11) Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation Devices
12) Blood gas monitoring devices
13) Angiovac
14) STS Data
15) Maintenance and cleaning of all equipment as needed.
16) Maintaining inventory and equipment logs
17) Medi-stim Flow Probe Device
Employee is subject to call back as required by the hospital.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs extra-corporeal circulation using heart-lung machines and ancillary related devices for medical and surgical support.
- Ensures proper functioning of bypass equipment and cell-saver equipment to insure age specific patient care.
- Documents bypass procedure as well as related labs, tests, etc. on current electronic medical record.
- Assumes responsibility for having adequate supplies necessary to provide bypass.
- Demonstrates responsibility for cost effective use of supplies and equipment.
- Stocks supplies related to perfusion.
- Remains informed of surgery schedule.
- Keeps abreast of new techniques and equipment related to cardiopulmonary bypass and cell saver functions.
- Charges for patient care administered and supplies used for cardiopulmonary bypass procedure and cell saver utilization.
- Assumes responsibility for continued occupational growth, department specific.
- Performs related responsibilities as required or directed insuring Quality Plus and Guest Excellence performance.
- Stocks supplies related to perfusion.
- Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
- Administer blood products, anesthetic agents, or drugs through perfusion circuit under surgeon or anesthesiologist supervision.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
- Graduate and successful completion of an accredited cardiovascular perfusion program
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
- Certified or certification eligible by American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion
- An active Tennessee License
EXPERIENCE:
- Knowledge of hospital and surgical policies and procedures as acquired through an accredited Perfusion Program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Competency in managing a full range of perfusion procedures
- Organized and detail-oriented with strong documentation habits
