Summary of Essential Functions

  • Performs all non-invasive respiratory care procedures. Is under immediate supervision until competency is demonstrated.
  • May perform invasive and critical care procedures, such as ventilator management, non-invasive ventilator care, and code 99 procedures.
  • Performs respiratory care procedures with an understanding of age-specific cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturation as related to specific care standards.

 

Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completed one semester of clinical rotation in an accredited Respiratory Program.
  • Must be enrolled and in good standing in the clinical portion of, or recently graduated from an accredited Respiratory Care Program.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

 

Licensure and Certifications

  • CPR Certification.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Apply understandings to carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Recognize problems and take reporting action based upon sound judgment.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Primarily works the day shift tour of duty; additional hours may be asked to work other hours as needed, including weekends.
  • May be expected to lift over twenty five (25) pounds.
  • Ability to distinguish between numbers and symbols.
  • Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity with substantial movement of wrist and/or fingers.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to normal or near normal range.
  • Extended periods of sitting and/or walking depending on specific duties.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clinical Practice: Completes all of the following according to the Policy and Procedure manuals. Responds in timely manner to emergencies. Performs pulmonary hygiene procedures. Performs diagnostic procedures. Performs mechanical ventilation. Performs oxygen therapy. Performs aerosol therapy.
  • Knowledge of Procedures: Apply and execute physician orders. Ensures all information is kept confidential.
  • Non-clinical Functions: Keeps accurate record in the hospital information system. Keeps accurate record of workload. Ensure that patient therapy records are completed. Participates with equipment processing as needed. Ensures that supplies are well stocked. Participates in maintaining an orderly department.
  • Clinical Functions: Instruct patients, families, and others in the proper application of respiratory care procedure and technique. Approach all care tasks with critical insight and make suggestions for changes as deemed appropriate. Ensures proper documentation of patient/family education.
  • Knowledge of Equipment: Evaluates blood gas and co-oximeter analyzers. Capable of trouble shooting respiratory care equipment.
  • Leadership Roles: Ability to evaluate and assess patient status and make recommendations for the best interest of the patient. Assist staff with technical and clinical questions and problem solving.
  • Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
