JOB LOCATION – Wilkes-Barre General Hospital – Day Shift

Position Purpose

Perform venipunctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks to obtain blood samples for testing purposes. Properly identify patients and follow procedures for the collection of specimens. Ensure that all information from the blood collection of specimens is entered into the laboratory computer system including time drawn, time received, and proper phlebotomist code. Collect a chain of custody urine drug screens for pre-employment, post-accident, and just cause cases using proper collection procedures defined by the client. Pick up samples from nursing units as required. Perform other related functions as assigned by the Phlebotomy Supervisor.

Position Qualifications

Education:

  • Completion of a formal training course in phlebotomy procedures from an accredited school or training program is preferred.

Experience/Specialized Skills/Aptitudes:

  • One (1) year phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Public relations skills; verbal ability to communicate with patients; finger and manual dexterity to handle small equipment; finger sensitivity to locate veins.

Licenses/Certificates:

  • BLS is required and must be completed prior to the end of orientation period.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License required.
