Overview:

Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center is hiring a Certified Surgical Assistant in Williamsburg, VA! This is a full-time position with required call.

Sign On Bonus up to $15,000 available for Qualified Candidates

Shifts Times Available:

Full-Time Day shift- 7am to 3pm or 7am to 7pm (12-hour)

Full-Time Second Shift- 11am to 11pm (12-hour)

Call Requirements: one overnight shift per week and one full weekend (24-hour shifts) per 6-week schedule. Due to trauma center designation, must be within 30 minutes of the facility for call. On Call rooms are available on site but not guaranteed.

Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Main OR is a magnet recognized site that provides advanced imaging and smart operating rooms. It is one of the few hospitals in the nation that has achieved a consecutive Leapfrog A safety rating. The Main Operating Room has 6 OR suites and will add neurology service line to their existing lines of General, GYN, Urology and Orthopedics. This 50-person team averages around 4,200 cases annually and offers robotic surgery. This regional medical center is expected to obtain Trauma center certification in 2026.

The Certified Surgical Assistant anticipates the needs of the surgical team, the Surgical Assistant assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, set up of various tables and positioning equipment, providing retraction for visualization of surgical site, cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of incision, instillation of medications, application of surgical dressings, splints, and casts. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant uses effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.

Education

  • TS – Trade School Graduate – Surgical Assistant or

  • Graduate of CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited Surgical Assistant Program

Certification/Licensure

  • Licensed Surgical Assistant – Virginia

  • Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) - Certifications - National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) OR

  • Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) - Certifications - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) 

Experience

  • 1 year of Operating room experience strongly preferred

  • Participates in departmental improvement efforts to include quality improvement projects, conducting in-services, etc. preferred

  • Uses effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes Preferred
