Fiat Powertrain Technologies of North America, Inc. (a global Brand under our parent company, Iveco Group) is looking for an Application Engineer - Project Leader to coordinate testing on engines and vehicles to validate new FPT Industrial engine applications and provides technical guidance to the brand team to develop and successfully implement product or service solutions that meet customer needs. This role serves as a senior individual contributor and technical lead within the team, acting as a key partner to the manager and supporting team execution through guidance, coordination, and mentorship. The position is expected to drive execution, support development, control issue resolution, and elevate team capability through knowledge sharing and coaching. This position can be based in Burr Ridge, Illinois OR Fargo, North Dakota.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary application engineering point of contact for vehicle engineering teams and for FPT development teams.
- Define product targets through deep analysis of vehicle integration requirements and lessons learned.
- Develop and maintain engine integration/validation and calibration release plans, coordinating with customers and internal stakeholders. Collaborate with functional leaders to define calibration development plans and requirements.
- Act as a technical lead and “second-in-command” within the team, supporting the manager in driving priorities, coordinating activities, and ensuring alignment across projects.
- Provide day-to-day guidance to team members, helping to prioritize work, remove roadblocks, and ensure consistent execution.
- Support onboarding and development of team members through mentorship, coaching, and knowledge sharing (no direct supervisory responsibility).
- Liaise with hardware, software, and systems design engineers to ensure that products are modified, configured, and installed according to customer needs and internal requirements. Lead resolution of technical issues to closure.
- Evaluate complete application cost and effort. Review project proposals to ensure they are technically accurate, consistent with the organization’s quality and product standards, and aligned with overall business and product strategy.
- Prepare and release project status tracking and reporting documents. Develop concise technical documentation to summarize progress and risks.
- Provide input to the technical team on project status, risks, resource needs, and potential mitigation strategies.
- Participate with functional groups and engineers in maintaining application and certification requirements in support of product launch milestones.
- Develop, evaluate, and review integration and installation procedures and standards to ensure consistent, high-quality execution.
- Perform on-vehicle testing in accordance with application sign-off requirements. Complete testing reports and sign-off documentation in a timely manner.
- Drive best practices and continuous improvement within the team, promoting a culture of quality and accountability.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally (up to 25%).
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.
- Eight (8)+ years of experience in engine or equipment engineering.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex technical projects and prioritize workload effectively.
- Proven ability to lead projects and influence others without formal authority.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills with the ability to operate with a high level of autonomy.
Preferred Qualifications/Nice to Have
- Experience with vehicle integration, testing diesel engines, or testing other equipment, including data review and reporting.
- Exposure to industry standard tools: Inca, MatLab, CANalyzer.
- Experience in project management with the ability to summarize complex information and manage multiple projects at a time.
- Team player mentality with the ability to build relationships and influence, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Ability to understand customers’ needs and to provide sound recommendations in the short and long-term, communicate those needs to the international team, and take accountability for actions.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
