POSITION SUMMARY: Preserve the appearance of City parks and facilities by maintaining grounds and to preserve safe roadways by maintaining City streets and street signs. Position also performs related tasks such as mowing and landscaping parks and City facilities, mowing rights-of-way, cleaning, and repairing facilities, patching, striping, and repairing streets and repairing and replacing signs and sign posts. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Maintains City parks and City facilities by mowing and edging, landscaping grounds, picking up debris and tree limbs, cutting down and planting trees, trimming trees and shrubs.
  • Maintains City rights-of-way by mowing, edging and picking up debris.
  • Maintains, cleans and repairs playground equipment and park /City facilities.
  • Maintains City streets by digging trenches, placing and finishing concrete, patching potholes, spraying herbicides, loading and unloading vehicles, moving materials and equipment, litter abatement, painting/striping lines, and curb repair. 
  • Repairs and replaces signs by replacing and installing signs, digging holes for signposts, installing sign poles and clearing weeds and debris around signs.
  • Disposes of City trash by emptying and changing trash bags, disposing of trash containers in parks and around City facilities and delivering trash to the landfill.
  • Ensures the safety of workers and the public by placing barricade and safety cones around work areas.
  • Operates dump truck, backhoe, excavator, skid steer, loaders and other associated equipment and tools as needed.
  • Backfills and dresses excavated areas.
  • Provides and participates in emergency responses which, while not all inclusive, may include traffic control for extended periods, continual and strenuous sandbagging, emergency repairs to public facilities, assisting with evacuations, etc. 
  • Resolves and/or refers public inquiries and complaints 
  • Maintains assigned tools, equipment, and vehicle in proper working and safe operating condition by performing daily and preventative maintenance.
  • Must be available for rotational on call duty
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of landscaping and grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge of asphalt and concrete preparation and application.
  • Knowledge of the city geography including street locations.
  • Knowledge of state requirements for work area safety.
  • Knowledge of department safety rules and procedures.
  • Ability to work under stress and use good judgment in emergency situations
  • Ability to tactfully respond to requests and inquiries from the general public
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and trenches
  • Skill in operating lawncare maintenance equipment such as zero turn mowers, push mowers, weed eaters, and back-blowers.
  • Skills in operating variety of power tools, hand tools, and various construction and excavation equipment


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: The Director of Public Works assigns work in terms of general instructions and occasionally detailed instructions. The work is spot checked for accuracy and propriety of the final results. This position will also receive daily direction from the Crew Leader. This position does not supervise any other positions.

This position will have intermittent periods of standing, sitting, and walking. Intermittent moderate amount of walking (7-10 miles) is required for this position. The employee must have the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull greater than 50 pounds, and may require infrequent lifting of greater than 100 pounds. 

This position is exposed to extreme elements including extreme heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, noise intensity level, moving mechanical parts/hazards, dirt/dust, and odors. Constant use of protective personnel equipment including but not limited to footwear, eyewear, and use of reflective clothing is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • None; however, one (1) year experience performing manual labor and/or customer service experience preferred.
  • Experience in backhoe operations preferred.
  • May be required to acquire additional certification.
  • Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license
  • A combination of education, training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered
