Pharmacy Technician The pharmacy technician position is responsible for preparing medications for patient consumption under the general supervision of a licensed pharmacist and in accordance with standard departmental procedures. Reporting Relationship Pharmacist-in-Charge Responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician Receive prescription by walk in, phone, fax, computer, or mail. Verifies that all the information on the prescription is complete and accurate. Prepares prescriptions for dispensing by the pharmacist by retrieving, counting, pouring, weighing and at times mixing medication. Enters data in computer system, recording all the prescriptions, purchase orders, requisition, and disbursements. Contacts referring physicians’ offices with questions concerning prescriptions or refill request. Performs general clerical duties such as answering phones, operating cash register, etc. Orders, receives, and maintains inventory of drugs and chemicals, and ensures their security. Maintain proper storage for drugs. Checks and removes outdated meds on a routine basis to ensure that no deteriorated meds in stock. Keeps appropriate records. Areas of work are checked routinely for maintenance of quality control. Clean and help maintain equipment in work areas. Sterilize per the prescribed method. Attends and participates in pharmacy meetings to exchange ideas to achieve goals of the department. Assist in keeping procedures up-to-date in pharmacy manuals to train new personnel and to have quick reference to specific jobs so they are performed per the policies of the department. Ensure compliance with all licensure and federal, state, and local laws and regulations; observe the Pharmacy’s policies on “best practices”. Perform other duties as assigned by the pharmacist. This position requires frequent standing and walking to storage shelves and filling counters to fill prescriptions. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities are required by this job include close vision, distant vision, peripheral vision, and see distinctions in colors and shapes is also required. This position is moderately active and requires standing and walking for the duration of the shift. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
