Job Summary:
The Research Scientist – Synthesis Development will be part of the Enabling Technologies team. In this position, the scientist will develop innovative synthetic methodologies to realize novel OLED material designs. The position also involves modeling, design, and synthesis of organic and organometallic compounds with an emphasis on researching the properties of the materials in the context of OLED display engineering. In this role, you will collaborate with chemists and engineers to optimize syntheses and molecular properties to improve OLED materials and devices.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and/or develop modern synthetic methodologies to solve challenging bond formations.

  • Develop fit-for-purpose molecular assembly strategies to enable access to advanced OLED molecules, structural diversity studies, and drive down cost of goods.

  • Coordinate with OLED chemistry colleagues to identify opportunities and solve synthetic challenges using Enabling Technologies team solutions and platforms.

  • Design innovative materials and develop in-depth knowledge of organic electronic material properties, synthesis and display applications.

  • Perform design, synthesis, purification, analysis and characterization of small to medium scale organic and/or organometallic compounds.

  • Implement state-of-the-art synthetic methods to access novel organic and/or organometallic compounds.

  • Collaboration with chemists and engineers to improve materials and devices.

  • Stay up to date with scientific literature.

  • Be able to write and interpret technical information and effectively communicate with peers within the team and across the organization.

  • Accurately record experimental work within the electronic notebook(s).

  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory work area and follow all relevant safety policies.

  • Be responsible lab citizen.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Organic or Organometallic Chemistry; Post-doctoral experience or relevant industry experience is preferred.

  • In-depth understanding and proven experience in multi-step synthesis and characterization of organic and/or organometallic compounds.

  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of organic and organometallic reaction mechanisms.

  • Current knowledge in modern synthetic techniques and instrumentation, including, but not limited to modern coupling methods, electrochemistry, C-H activation, flow chemistry, high-throughput experimentation methodology is preferred.

  • Knowledge of reaction process parameters, modern data analytic tools, including machine learning, design of experiments, automated laboratory instruments (i.e. liquid/solid handling robot), and analytical techniques (HPLC, GC, MS, NMR, UV).

  • Experienced in basic computer software and internet applications including: MS Office Suit, ChemDraw, e-notebook and LIMS.

  • Strong organizational skills, keen attention to detail, and ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and proactively with minimal direction.

  • Ability to perform and succeed in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with peers and management.

  • Ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems in an efficient, proactive manner.

  • Demonstrated track record of accuracy and thoroughness.
