Job Purpose & Position Overview 

The incumbent serves as a Public Health Educator with emphasis in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention for groups and the community. Responsible for developing annual health education program plan. 

Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Assess individual and community needs for health education through surveys and collaboration with community health programs.
  • Designs, develops and assists in producing culturally relevant exercise, wellness, and other health promotion disease and prevention services and programs.
  • Responsible for planning and coordination of community wide health promotion/disease prevention for children, teens, adults and elders.
  • Develop and maintains cooperation between public, civic, professional and volunteer's agencies.
  • Serves as an advisor to community and tribal groups interested in the improvement of community health.
  • Prepares health teaching materials to be used in demonstrations, group discussions, public display, and health fairs for resources purposes.
  • Provides one-on-one interventions and health education to clientele per referral or by individual client request regarding communicable diseases or specific health hazards.
  • Analyze and interpret data in order to effectively evaluate health education programs.
  • Develop, coordinate and administer specialized training programs for Public Health Programs and Service Unit staff and resource people in expertise areas to enhance health services.
  • Plan, develop and coordinate a Tobacco Prevention Plan that utilizes smoking cessation classes, education, exercise and wellness approaches in a variety of services and programs.
  • Assists with our facilities research projects relative to exercise/wellness and health promotion and disease prevention programs.
  • Secures and maintain supplies and equipment for health education programs.
  • Complete written reports as required.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required. 

Qualifications/Skills: 

  • Associate's degree in health education, public health, health services or business management, nursing, social work, educational psychology with at least four years of experience in a related position is preferred; or any equivalent combination of abilities, experience and training.
  • Must possess experience with project management and coordination of services, budgeting, reporting and supervision, preferably in the field of Public Health.
  • Ability to research, analyze and interpret health related data and statistics.
  • Must possess interviewing skills and counseling techniques to provide one-on-one health education sessions with clients.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and Privacy Act.
  • Must possess and demonstrate excellent oral and writing proficiency.
  • Must have knowledge of computers and software.
  • A valid driver’s license is required and to comply with the Tribe’s Insurance.  
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and problem solving skills.
  • Incumbent must possess cultural awareness, be alcohol and drug free, and display a positive role model for the youth and adults of the Winnebago community.

Physical Requirements:   

  • Normal to light office work which includes the ability to lift up to 10 lbs. 
  • Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment.

Language Requirements:
