Student Trainee - Clinical NLP for Physical Activity Data Extraction

Position Overview

We are seeking a senior computer science student with machine learning and AI experience to join our multidisciplinary research team focused on improving physical activity interventions for older adults. This position offers hands-on experience applying natural language processing to real-world healthcare challenges while working alongside biomedical informaticists and geriatric physical therapy specialists. This is an on-site position.

Project Description

You will develop and apply clinical NLP methods to extract physical activity recommendations from unstructured physical therapy clinical notes. This project aims to better understand how physical activity is prescribed to older adults to prevent and manage frailty. Your work will contribute to research that could improve care quality and outcomes for aging populations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply clinical NLP packages and techniques for information extraction from unstructured clinical text
  • Develop methods to identify and extract physical activity recommendations, exercise prescriptions, and related clinical data from physical therapy notes
  • Process and analyze clinical documentation while maintaining data privacy and security standards
  • Collaborate with physical therapists to understand clinical terminology and documentation practices
  • Work with biomedical informaticists to integrate NLP outputs into research databases
  • Document code, methods, and findings for reproducibility and team knowledge sharing
  • Participate in regular team meetings and present progress updates

Required Qualifications

  • Senior-level standing in Computer Science or closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience with machine learning and AI concepts and applications
  • Programming proficiency in Python or similar languages commonly used in ML/NLP
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with common ML/NLP libraries (scikit-learn, spaCy, NLTK, Hugging Face, etc.)
  • Interest in healthcare applications of AI
