Job Summary:

Performs unsupervised laboratory procedures associated with human in-vitro fertilization (IVF), andrology procedures that relate to IVF, and all pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PDG) procedures.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs all aspects of assisted reproductive procedures including: sperm wash, media preparation, egg insemination/fertilization, egg clean-up/score of fertilization, embryo culture, grading, assisted hatching, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), sperm identification from epididymal aspirated or testicular biopsy, embryo transfer, embryo freeze, embryo thaw, and embryo biopsy.
  • Performs egg freeze and egg thaw that results in a high survival rate.
  • Orders, receives, inspects and stores culture media. Performs all initial quality control testing following outlined procedures before release of media, for use in embryology procedures.
  • Performs identification and isolation of human oocytes from follicular fluid at the time of aspiration.
  • Maintains proper operation of permanent specialized equipment such as the incubator, pH meter, osmometer, microscopes, centrifuge, hoods, ICSI equipment, freezing equipment and monitoring systems.
  • Prepares and forwards the Embryology Laboratory Charges Report to the billing specialists at the end of each IVF procedure. Maintains all inventories of cryopreserved embryos by maintaining Cryopreserved Embryo Logs, AMG Cryopreserved Embryo Inventory Cards and Cryopreserved Embryo Billing Inventory Reports. Maintains and updates all patient files and paperwork concerning IVF procedures. Counsels patients, obtain patient consent to different procedures and answer their questions regarding the laboratory aspects of IVF care.
  • Enters patient and cycle information into appropriate database and electronically transmits data to Society for Advanced Reproductive Technology (SART) in a timely manner. Enters data into the infertility data system (IDS) and maintains up to date electronic records of all aspects of the IDS.
  • Assists in preparing for the College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspections.
  • Acts as a lab and department resource and role model to employees, which includes training/orienting and providing day-to-day work direction. Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress and accuracy of work, monitors productivity, maintains appropriate staffing levels, directs efforts, and provides guidance on more complex issues.
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable policies, procedures and regulatory, compliance and scope of practice guidelines; assists in ensuring staff compliance.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or related field
  • Typically requires 5 years of clinical experience in in-vitro fertilization and sterile technique.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Must possess the ability for accuracy and attention to detail when working.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills to interact with patients, physicians, nurses and other employees.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to biological and chemical hazards and body fluids requires observation of universal precautions; protective clothing and following Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) suggested safety measures.
  • Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. Will occasionally be required to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to sit, stand and walk for the majority of the workday.
  • Exposure to some odors.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radioactive and/or infectious agents.
  • Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.
  • May require travel, therefore may be exposed to inclement weather and adverse road conditions.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
