Position Summary

The Mass Grading Foreman is responsible for overseeing and coordinating daily mass grading operations on heavy civil construction projects, including site development, earthwork, excavation, and grading activities. This position leads field crews, manages equipment operations, ensures work is completed safely and efficiently, and maintains quality standards according to project plans and specifications. The ideal candidate has strong leadership skills, extensive experience in site development, and the ability to manage grading crews and equipment in a fast-paced construction environment.

Key Responsibilities

Supervise and coordinate daily mass grading operations, including excavation, embankment, cut/fill operations, and site preparation.

Lead and direct grading crews, equipment operators, laborers, and subcontractors to ensure productivity and quality.

Review project plans, grade stakes, and specifications to ensure work is completed accurately.

Coordinate with Project Managers, Superintendents, operators, surveyors, and other field personnel.

Monitor equipment utilization and ensure operators are working efficiently.

Operate or assist with grading equipment as needed, including dozers, excavators, loaders, and motor graders.

Ensure proper preparation, placement, and compaction of soils according to project requirements.

Conduct daily job site inspections and address safety, quality, and production concerns.

Maintain accurate daily reports, production tracking, and documentation.

Enforce company safety policies, OSHA standards, and job site procedures.

Train, mentor, and provide direction to crew members to improve performance and productivity.

Identify potential issues and communicate solutions to management.

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of experience in heavy civil construction, mass grading, or site development.

Previous experience supervising grading crews and equipment operators required.

Strong knowledge of earthwork, excavation, grading, drainage, and soil compaction practices.

Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and grade plans.

Experience working with GPS machine control systems is a plus.

Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and meet project deadlines.

May require working outdoors for extended periods.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described below represent the conditions an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this position.

Primarily works on construction sites and roadways.

Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, noise, and changing job site conditions.

Must follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Typical working hours are 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM (40–50 hours per week), with occasional overtime as needed to meet project deadlines.
