Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki is seeking an experienced Math Teacher to join our faculty and support a place-based curriculum that integrates language learning with community engagement and the natural environment. This position plays a key role in helping students build meaningful math skills through thoughtful instruction and real-world application.

  • Location: Wiscasset, Maine (On Campus, in-person)

    • Opportunity for Residential Position (no pets in shared housing)

  • Reports to: Director of Maine Coast Semester

  • Schedule:  Academic Year

    • Anticipated Start Date: August, 2026

Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki is a transformative, place-based academic program for high-achieving high school juniors from across the country. Set on a 400-acre saltwater peninsula in midcoast Maine, the semester combines rigorous college-preparatory academics with hands-on environmental learning, outdoor adventure, and community living. Students explore challenging questions in small, discussion-based classes while engaging deeply with the natural world and contributing meaningfully to a collaborative, inclusive campus culture.

What You’ll Do

  • Faculty Responsibilities

  • Teach at the AP level (Calculus AB and BC) and non-AP level (Precalculus) each semester.

  • Offer academic support for math students outside of class.

  • Take on other semester school responsibilities that align with your skills and interests.

  • Serve as an advisor for 3-4 students.

  • Residential Duties (optional)

    • Serve as a mentor for a cabin of 6-8 students.

    • Work with students three days a week on morning chores.

    • Assume rotating evening and weekend duty assignments. 

  • Provide personalized academic support beyond the classroom.

  • Collaborate with passionate colleagues and participate in faculty and community events.

  • Foster a classroom environment where curiosity, empathy, and global perspectives flourish.

This Position Requires:

  • In-person presence on our beautiful coastal campus in Wiscasset, Maine.

  • Active participation in a close-knit community—sharing meals, ideas, and responsibilities.

  • Commitment to safety, inclusivity, and restorative practices.

Qualifications:

  • Must pass a criminal background check, including motor vehicle record.

  • Valid Driver’s License approved by Chewonki’s insurance carrier.

  • Must be at least 21 years old.

  • Must complete fingerprinting requirements of the Maine Department of Education.

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.

  • Demonstrated passion for intellectual pursuits.

  • Demonstrated history of successful experience(s) working with adolescents in a variety of learning environments.

  • Commitment to following safety protocols and maintaining positive, respectful interactions with students is expected.

  • Willingness to embrace the lifestyle of working and living in a dynamic semester school by being a team player, eagerly assuming many roles, and devoting the time required to model excellence in job performance. 

  • Preferred Qualifications: First Aid, Lifeguard, or WFR certifications and familiarity with restorative practices.
